The Battle of Vimy Ridge (9–12 April 1917) was part of the Battle of Arras, in the Pas-de-Calais department of France, during the First World War.
Supported by a creeping barrage, the Canadian Corps captured most of the ridge during the first day. The village of Thélus fell on the second day, as did the crest of the ridge, once the Canadian Corps overran a salient against considerable German resistance. The final objective, a fortified knoll outside the village of Givenchy-en-Gohelle, fell to the Canadians on 12 April. The 6th Army retreated to the Oppy–Méricourt line.
Historians attribute the success of the Canadian Corps to technical and tactical innovation, meticulous planning, powerful artillery support and extensive training and the inability of the 6th Army properly to apply the new German defensive doctrine. The battle was the first occasion when the four divisions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force fought together and it was made a symbol of Canadian national achievement and sacrifice. A 100 ha (250-acre) portion of the battleground serves as a memorial park and site of the Canadian National Vimy Memorial.[5]

My grandparents came to Canada in WW2 after nearly being killed by german bombing in Belgium, to be with family that came here during WWI to escape the same thing. We had a lot of family members that went back to serve in the army, and I can fully understand why there were no intentions of playing nice.
Edit: We're polite, but you only get so many sorrys before the hockey sticks come out.

we were better trained and also the benefit of the fact you pretty much grew up with the same people you were fighting next to so everyone knew what each othere were capable of.
Canadians squads/companies/whatever were pretty much town based. So if you were from the same town chances were good you'd all be in the same squad.
Was another reason why we were known to be so vicious. you'd be pretty damn pissed off too if the enemy just killed the only friend you had since childhood and you saw it happen first hand. Add to the fact Canadians just love a good ol "donnybrook" We love fighting, even pretend fighting. There's a reason why so many of us love Hockey and why some of the best pro-wrestlers ever are Canadian.
But there's also a reason why the concept of putting people from the same place in the same unit wasn't continued. One unlucky shell and it isn't "Oh, a guy from that village fell." it's "Oh, every man from that village is dead now."
