I went into the article thinking this company was planning to try to use DNA samples of extinct species to clone them and reintroduce them, but it seems they just want to genetically modify existing animals to look like extinct species? I can't say I really see the point, honestly. Even as far as research into genetic modifications goes, I feel like there are more practical applications of it than that.

I would suggest the preferable term re--extantion as extinction is a definitive event and any species de-extincted was strictly never extinct in hindsight and so yields runtime errors in the brain like Kirk overloading a supercomputer.
