N64 controllers with this layout always annoy me, because you can't use them to play Goldeneye or Perfect Dark with the d-pad under your left thumb, and the analog stick under your right thumb. 1.2 Solitaire layout with the left grip on a standard controller is my preferred way to play these games.

Ok so I am not crazy then! Yeah, its miserable with this setup. I bought a modkit for the og controller for that exact reason.

Ooh, they knew to put the joystick on the left.

I wonder how these feel compared to a gamecube controller. I found the gc controller feels good in emulators for n64.

I don't have a proper gc controller but I do have the retrofighter gc. For perfect dark and goldeneye, the "modern" layout on the 8bitdo controller feels really odd. I was not able to get comfortable with any of the layouts. Then again, its been years since I played around on a console and not been able to tweak the individual mapping so it could just be me.

For racing games and platformers they are great.

I wonder what those are like compared to the Retro Fighters Brawler 64.

I have the gamecube one and the og xbox one. They feel better than the gc ones and about the same as the og xbox one.
