I’m unreasonably bothered it isn’t spelled “Inducthor”

[-] ZeroHora@lemmy.ml 22 points 1 month ago

Well it's spelled correctly in Portuguese at least.

[-] wander1236@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 month ago

Portuguese really likes dropping C's doesn't it

[-] ZeroHora@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 month ago

Everybody most hated letter. It doesn't make anysense.

CA sounds like KA CE sounds like SE CI sounds like SI CO sounds like KO CU sounds like KU

[-] far_university1990@reddthat.com 3 points 1 month ago

In german ck is just k or kk, ch sound like something stuck in throat or hiss, sch is sh.

Only reason need c to make harsh sound.

It wasn't always this weird but C spent too much time hanging out with E and I and they started to influence C. "Ke" and "ki" became "kye" and "kyi" and eventually "che" and "chi" then in some places it turned to "she" and "shi" then "se" and "si". Now we even have "the" and "thi" in some Spanish dialects.

[-] marcos@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

There was an international agreement in the 1970s about that. I imagine Portugal didn't like any bit of it.

[-] Morlark@feddit.uk 15 points 1 month ago

*reasonably bothered.

That is a perfectly reasonable bother, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

I'm really glad the "þ" guy didn't create this.

[-] general_kitten@sopuli.xyz 11 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

i þink specifically þis post would have been better wið þe "þ" guy. especially as "Þórr" woud be þe original correct spelling for þe god in question. who says your letters are þe only correct ones? English is an ever changing amalgamation of different languages. Did anyone ever say þat "þ" is a wrong letter and now it and shall not be used? Is older english þen incorrect? We are in lemmy, we are allowed to be quirky, at least should be in my opinion. Reviving a forgotten letter, attaching anti AI EULA to every comment, writing in a quirky way þat can be only one person in lemmy. Ðese quirks, to me are sings of true personality þat is much too forgotten in todays social media. English is my second language, finnish my first. þhese letters are foreign to me like many of your letters. For my brain and language background why isnt q=gu, Z=ts, w=vh/u, c= k/ts/s/sh, vhy not just get rid of rest of þhe useless kharakters.

Vhriting þis komment tauþ me þe differense betvheen "þ" and "ð". And made me reimaʒine vhat english could be like

sorry for þis post

[-] blackbrook@mander.xyz 5 points 1 month ago

I'd defend to the death your right to this opinion! :"^D

[-] general_kitten@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 month ago

If i may ask I would like to know about your detailed opinion on þe matter.

[-] pageflight@piefed.social 4 points 1 month ago

þat was þoroughly convincing, I þought for a minute þere you were þat guy, had to check þrough your posts.

[-] UltraGiGaGigantic@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

If you are here asking: "Is this a science meme?"

Probably, yes. We use the Dawkins definition of meme: a replicating idea, not just an image macro with a fact on it. A good post here doesn't need to teach you something. It needs to make you ask something: who, what, where, when, and especially why or how.

Science isn't a filing cabinet of facts, it's a conversation. For example, a photo of an eel or other localized wildlife counts because most people never see one, and wonder is the first step of inquiry. A car meme counts if it makes you curious about what's under the bonnet. If you want to talk about something you noticed in the world, chances are someone else wants to talk about it too.

We moderate for vibe, not category. Pruning is light, especially where a post creates interesting discussion. Experimenting is encouraged.

See the pinned paper on Shitposting as Public Pedagogy if you want the academic case for why this works.
