Accurate. My husband works in the mining industry and it's ... Painfully common for highly intelligent engineers that speak 4 languages to be treated like shit because their employers hold the key to their citizenship. It's fucked.

They get 6 month contracts and are never told until the last minute if their contract will be extended and if it isn't then they have very little time and even less savings to get a new job before they are breaking the rules of their visa and get deported.

Most places don't rent to them either, so they were often stuck in shitty apartments run by slum lords.

The same extension of contract thung happened with me as well. In the team standup my manager announced my contract will get renewed but that day evening I was welcomed with the news of two days notice period. It's a very fresh wound at the moment so need to let it heal

I'm so sorry that's happened to you. My husband works for a smaller company providing services to the mining companies. A few years ago he asked me if they should sponsor someone employed there.

I told him yes, that we had a responsibility to look after people trying to do the right things and make a life here.

Unfortunately it is far too common for companies to take advantage, forgetting that these are people with lives.

I hope you find a great position with good people who value you. ❤️
