These data come from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Mauna Loa Observatory, which may soon be shut down because of proposed government budget cuts

"depressing"

Why does it need to be in quotes

[-] calliope@piefed.blahaj.zone 14 points 2 weeks ago

Because it’s a direct quote from a guy in the article.

Climate scientist Zachary Labe of Climate Central, a nonprofit that researches climate change, says the new record is “depressing” but not unexpected.

Nitpick here: they are in single quoutes which means half of fuck all.

Double quotes are for a direct quote. Single quotes are to express the intent of what was said, or for quotes within quotes.

Labe explains that the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere tends to peak in April each year as decaying plants release greenhouse gases after winter. Some of that CO2 gets reabsorbed by plants as they grow during the warmer months.

In case anyone else is wondering why it doesn't just go up continuously...

As long as the rich get to live in luxury and die right before it gets unlivable they'll continue fucking it up.

I get the feeling they plan look like this eventually.

This might be relevant: https://www.co2meter.com/blogs/news/carbon-dioxide-indoor-levels-chart

I wonder what level of CO2 oil industry experts consider acceptable in an office?

There are not enough fossil fuels to push things up to the higher levels on that chart. Enough to destabilize the climate though

Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:
