And just because the 1st amendment allows us to criticize our government and you'll win your case, doesn't mean they won't illegally make your life hell between here and there.

And just because the 1st amendment allows us to criticize our government, doesn't mean they won't completely ignore our rights and nothing anyone can do will stop them.

Fascism has historically been defeated using specific tools. People here are happy to explain how to defeat fascism.... in Minecraft.

“Nothing anyone can do will stop them”

I mean, nothing that can be said without a quick ban for it ;)

Good luck with your 1st amendment court case while you rot in a forced labor camp in El Salvador.

[-] HasturInYellow@lemmy.world 4 points 20 hours ago

Having had at no point in my life, a true desire for life, I will laugh at them trying to get me to one of those camps. Should be a good show for all around.

This is quite dilemma, if they do it to individuals they can easily get away with it, but they are powerless of we stand up together.

This is why they try to break us, because if we are not together or is easy to break us and we all lose.

This is also why protests (even the peaceful ones that everyone criticizes) are so important because they show everyone, including ourselves how baby of us are there.

When this is over, MAGA won't be able to hide their support. If they say they just supported "Republicans" in this time then they were still MAGA. Being Republican at this time is being MAGA.

Also weird: Those of us who said back when it was formed that the name, "Homeland Security," wasn't just fascist-sounding, and maybe telegraphed the real intent, were somehow correct. Broken clocks, I guess.

Osama really did fuck the US up.

I mean it was kinda like that but boy did 9 11 really supercharge it.

[-] DiarrheaSommelier@lemmy.ca 20 points 1 day ago

Oh Osama 100% won. 9-11 was entirely successful at breaking the USA.

[-] henfredemars@infosec.pub 27 points 1 day ago

Sounds like it's a good idea to use an instance that isn't in the USA to protect yourself from data demands.

[-] Krusty@quokk.au 11 points 1 day ago

They just passed legislation in the house (it'll pass the Senate probably) that allows them to spy on anyone anywhere in the world.

[-] tempest@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 day ago

They were already allowed to spy on non US citizens as much as they pleased.

The 5 eyes just made it super easy to ask someone else to acquire some data on US citizens and put it in a database that they conveniently had access.

Now, since the most of the country likes to gargle Trump's balls on the off chance he might hurt some non whites they don't even need the plausible deniability.

[-] huppakee@piefed.social 1 points 20 hours ago

They can spy on non-us organizations, but they can't demand anything. You're better off having your data stored outside of the us by a non-us entity.

[-] OwOarchist@pawb.social 6 points 1 day ago

I'm on a VPN that has a proven track record of refusing US warrants in the past. I think I'll be alright.

IP is only one unique identifier, browser fingerprinting works quite well too.

The average person can’t afford to defend themselves in court.

A local ACLU affiliate may be able to assist with finding representation. The First Amendment Coalition legal hotline is another option. There's also the American Bar Association lawyer referral directory (or just put "[your state] bar association" into your search engine of choice and browse for its lawyer-finding resources).

Many places offer pro bono representation for those who cannot afford to defend themselves. Doesn't mean it's easy or that it isn't a pain in the ass to have to go through the process but the alternative is letting the bastards win and that's unacceptable to vertebrates.

[-] SoupBrick@pawb.social 20 points 1 day ago

A feature of our current system. :(

[-] CosmicTurtle0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 1 day ago

The way I read this is the average person has nothing to lose.

[-] Krusty@quokk.au 5 points 1 day ago

They have everything to lose and they're one missed pay check away from homelessness.

[-] eestileib@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 day ago

The thing is, the entire us economic system is busy trying to make the distinction between employment and homelessness as thin as possible.

They want you to extract zero extra value from being employed with them, they want every single interaction blown apart and separate.

The entire goal of Samuelson-derived econ is precisely to leave people with nothing left to lose. This is why Rights and Deeds and Compacts are so important, they are emotional bulwarks that the extractive class can provide at, frankly, very low cost.

And the Epstein class has decided to shred the final pretenses of civil rights just as their idiotic war will destroy the economy.

A lot of people perceive themselves as having way less to lose than you think.
