I am just noticing that Unruffled proposed to refederate Lemmygrad to dbzer0. The people who upvoted aren't a surprise. What is sad is the db0 was one of the upvoters and this was nine months ago.

It loses the fun alliteration, but we’re gonna have to change it from the “Tankie Triad” to the “Tankie Quintad”

Opening their account and get hit with

Tankies blame the SPD for the death of Karl Liebknecht.

Like??? yeah??? Wer hat uns verraten??? Wer wars denn nun?

edit: since this comment got linked might as well tell you all to fucking read "The german revolution" by Pierre Broue and here the thread where Emopunker took every chance to confirm that fedditors are required by law to be zionists.

like clockwork, they finally caught a rule 1 (temp) instance ban and there's a cm0000002 post rending their garments about how it's "bigotry" to speak ill of lemmy.ml.

like bruh the rule 1 ban is probably more related to this activity. the i report i made probably just showed up for the .ml admins too:

I think nearly any discussion of 1920s Germany at this point is getting lost in the sauce. I don't think anything about that context carries any weight with most people outside of internet political forums. Even if you educate someone about the context and convince them your take on it is correct, you still have to climb the mountain of "and how does that relate to today?" And while there are some parallels, there are a lot of enormous differences.

If someone brings up Weimar Germany, the best response is usually "cool, back to Iran/Palestine/ICE..." rather than jumping down into the weeds with them.

disagree, the war credits debate that led to the split is almost beat for beat like the pissrael funding and the fallout should tell people why people need to split the dem party. Or applied to germany the rearmament movement and eu-army sentiments that are springing up left and right.

Edit: we again have a pre-revolutionary russia, europes contradictions sharpening and eyeing an attack to the east, we are gonna see a repeat of the tragedy of the 1910s (as a farce?) and better know about the fallout like luxemburg said

Friedrich Engels once said: “Bourgeois society stands at the crossroads, either transition to socialism or regression into barbarism.” [...] In this war imperialism has won. Its bloody sword of genocide has brutally tilted the scale toward the abyss of misery. The only compensation for all the misery and all the shame would be if we learn from the war how the proletariat can seize mastery of its own destiny and escape the role of the lackey to the ruling classes.

    emphasis me

Even if you educate someone about the context and convince them your take on it is correct

Because we're skipping past this part to the "here's how it's relevant to today" part, I want to again emphasize that educating someone about the internal party dynamics of the Weimar Republic and convincing them your take is correct is a herculean task in its own right. This is reasons 1-100 of why delving into this topic is a poor way of convincing anyone of anything.

But assume you've educated me on all the context and I agree with you about who's at fault for what in 1920s Germany. When trying to apply that to today you still run into huge points of disagreement like:

    • That was a parliamentary system and we have just two parties, right? Doesn't that change the "split the party" discussion quite a bit?
    • What about all the ballot access issues that would come with splitting from Democrats?
    • If we're successful splitting from Democrats, can't they just run in our primaries like we occasionally run in theirs? There isn't a way to expel people from parties in the U.S. the way there is in European parties, right?
    • Was there a huge lobby on one side of the war credits debate that exists in parallel with a huge imperial interest in an overseas colony?
    • Germany had just lost a devastating war in its front yard. The U.S. doesn't have anything like that today, right?
    • Germany had its colonies stripped away after WWI while they U.S. is the premier imperial power of today. Doesn't that change a lot?
    • Weren't the conditions of the average German worker far different from the conditions of the average U.S. worker today? How comparable is a guy driving an Uber to a guy in a factory?

The comparison adds more complexity rather than clarifies, and it opens up a dozen theoretical rabbit holes to get lost in.

I guess I see your point, I was reading it as a german with a german perspective and leo-point might as well be a pitcure of me while reading it (I never got around to finish it sadly). Although a lot of people probably will not agree with me that the parallels are as self-evident I guess.

Also just to clarify the book starts in the 1910s and goes through WW1 up until 1923, not that it makes a difference for your point.

Hexbear is left-unity, dbzer0 is largely anarchist, Grad is 99% ML. Hex and dbzer0 have that anarchist overlap, but there's little ML overlap between Grad and dbzer0. That said, Hex seems to be mostly ML so I imagine in time Grad and dbzer0 may federate. Or, rather, dbzer0 may reciprocate, Grad doesn't really defed from anywhere serious.

    Edit:

Lmao, they think Hex is manipulating dbzer0 into defederating from Zionists, and used this comment as evidence. Nah, being Zionists is what got you defederated, something anarchists and Marxists can 100% agree on is support for Palestine.

That makes sense and thanks for the lore. In practice I think Hexbear is 99% ML also, but the difference is that HB is less serious. Personally I prefer that because I don’t think anonymous forums can ever be leveraged to organize, due to being public and open. Hexbear does it right. It’s mostly for sharing information and building camaraderie/optimism and fighting that lonely feeling when everyone IRL is liberal or worse.

Honestly, as a user of Grad and Bear, Grad is often pretty goofy too. Rather than being "serious," I'd say it's quieter and more chill. Hexbear is more energetic and fun, but I find myself preferring Grad from time to time and have an account there. There's no party building or anything over on Grad. As for Hex, I'd say you're underestimating the number of Maoists, anarchists, etc. MLs may be the majority, but there's quite a bit of variety here.

Also I think there's at least a few of us who are more non-denominational leftists for lack of a better term

Personally I don't see labels as being all that useful beyond the fact that someone calling themselves a socialist or a communist proves that they aren't scared of being called one

Ya I think the same. Declaring a specific ideology makes sense for a party, less so for an individual. A party has to define its aims, strategy, etc. so there is a practical need to clarify an ideological basis. As an individual, I learn from Marx, Lenin, and Mao but wouldn’t say I’m MLM. Though in principle I could join an organization that calls itself that. Anyway all these “isms” start to feel utopian and dogmatic which I am allergic to as a Marxist (intentionally ironic)

    oh no, am i the 1%? queen-ohoho

Hexbear does it right. It’s mostly for sharing information and building camaraderie/optimism and fighting that lonely feeling when everyone IRL is liberal or worse.

in my younger years i'd a lot of run-ins with 'ML' parties that were pretty shitty about being trans/gay; way too serious while simultaneously being deeply unserious. it's why i tended to stick to anarchist groups.

definitely a better balance here, plus where i'm currently at irl i've run into quite a lot of trans comrades that are ML/maoist such that it gives me hope that those issues aren't set in stone.

db0 had a vote and it failed! This is proof they're evil!!!

As opposed to .world who defederates without saying anything and says it's actually a good thing because they're bigger.

Did you know the Feddit.org OP for Zionism and said that only rabid antizionists said he was was a zionist?

Also he's currently malding over this thread. He's so upset he has to go to the place that makes him mad by [checks notes] documenting actions of him.

Huh, I wonder why a Zionist who posts in a Nazi bar on a explicitly Zionist instance would hate about people documenting actions...

Bonus ableism from a commenter in a thread saying Diva is using too much medication.

I was actually just there to make fun of that godawful nickname, 'quintad' isn't even a word guys

I think my favorite part is how according to them

a lot of the admins were on board with it and just months later they did a big campaign to get feddit.org defederated by calling it a Zionist instance even though the people from db0 who got banned legitimately said hateful and antisemitic shit.

"The campaign" being that they had a vote on if they should take a hard stance on zionism

Also at the time emopunker, another admin, made a post using their admin ability to see upvotes

These users highlighted started getting transphobic DM abuse shortly after.

there's been a handful of burner accounts being transphobic and saying Nazi/zionist shit in the wake of the .world zionism drama too. Just a coincidence im sure makima-think

Zionist instance even though the people from db0 who got banned legitimately said hateful and antisemitic shit.

Surely they have evidence of this, right? Like how Rimu said admins publicly declared death of Kaplan, when it was banning an admin for a Zionist talking point, and only called him that in a modlog.

Never replied to anyone who said that wasn't calling for death, even when Serinus banned and removed comments for Rimu.

Oh I know the answer here: "Death to Israel" and "From the River to the Sea" are actually calls to genocide and that's why they are antisemitic and anyone posting them is just using them as a dogwhistle to hide their real goal of killing all jews (from the g*rmans POV at least)

It's funny how .world and all of MWoG insist that everyone else is actually in kahoots when they are quite literally funded by an explicitly zionist organization, remove comments calling anything against that out, and then wonder why people say they are Zionists.

If you replace the word with any other philosophy, people wouldn't care. But since they support the mass genocide, they care a lot.
