Yeah ... never understood why people thought this would work. Bears eat dead things all the time.
Maybe it would work on a defensive/territorial bear by making them think you're no longer a threat? But a hungry bear is just going to be delighted at the easy meal.
You are increasing your chance of survival.
Bear will fuck you up no matter what if it decides to. It will outrun you, climb faster and higher than you, and there is no fighting it.
Playing dead just in case it's not currently hungry might just save your life.

Well, unless you've got some kind of weapon. (Which, if you're traipsing around in bear country, you probably should.)
Just "some kind" won't necessarily help. A gun has a good chance of just pissing it off more, and any melee weapon you better be a martial arts master.
Bear spray. You want bear spray.
A bear that's not hungry isn't going to eat you if you play dead, but could attack you if it feels threatened.
On the other hand, if the bear is hungry, it won't hesitate to munch on you.
What I remember hearing somewhere (and obviously put 0 faith in since I haven't done research) theres a phrase "if it's black fight back, if it's brown lay down, if it's red your dead"
