I watched the video this morning. It's actually worse than just this.

It's about so called chameleon trucking companies. They chameleon companies lease their trucks from a parent company that captures all the profit, re-lease them to drivers and then force the drivers to exceed the legal working time limits. When the safety record gets too bad they change company names. It's the same trucks, same dispatchers, same drivers, just changing the stickers on the truck.

The competition to screw drivers out of pay is on top of the already predatory lease relationship between these companies and the drivers. The driver accepts all the risk and expenses and is forced to use the company dispatchers and only haul freight brokered through them. They can reject loads or negotiate rates, but realistically they have a lease to pay in order to keep the truck, so they have to accept what is offered most of the time.

Its the most dangerous on the roads its ever been. I have to drive from one side of the country to Oklahoma about once a year. And I just wish we had fucking trains for that.

Covid brain and now you have trucks who have to drive longer with shorter breaks. It reminds me of when Well There Your Problem was on Work stoppage talking about the derailment epidemic.

There is almost always a wrecked semi on the road anymore. Hell we were just going to the bigger city for some shit and there was a semi literally smoking the road out cause something was on fire. Dude didn't even know. We had to roll our windows down and point to the back of his truck.

With more young people unable to find work you'll get drivers that have little experience driving of any type that are being thrown into big rigs also. At my job we got a delivery from a driver who was brand new, in college probably around 20, driving a full size trailer truck, he had just broken off one of the trailer doors backing up with it open. He was totally unconcerned and hopped out asking us "where's a good book store around here? My girlfriend wants me to grab her something while I'm in town." It was wild.

I saw an article that said many independent truck drivers are one breakdown away from losing their businesses. And then the middlemen do this.
