maybe i am just too dim to understand the nuances of diplomacy but I'm kinda surprised that he's allowed by the US to do this trip. Why give China some good free PR? Is it just joever for US power already?

it's ahead of Xi-Biden talks and China just bought 3 million tons of US soybean

yes that was in the article. Maybe i'm just overthinking the act's optical aspect and the truth of the matter is that Xi really likes those people and is continuing to keep in touch

No wonder he's visiting Iowa then

Biden desperately needs something that can be described as a foreign policy win. He promised victory in Ukraine and failed to deliver. He supported Israel's genocide and is now facing backlash at home and from abroad. Making peace with one of America's great enemies makes him look competent and statesman-like and China is the only realistic candidate for that.

On a geopolitical level, everyone knows that the US is now embroiled in the EU and ME for the time being. China kicking off in the Pacific could cause a cascade failure of the US Empire. The rational thing to do is to mend fences with China in the short term to avoid that. In addition, Biden wants China to continue buying (and stop dumping) US Treasury bonds to avert a debt financing crisis. Optimistically, he might also want the Chinese on side with another 2008-style bailout if the US economy goes into recession again.

all this makes sense! Yet that new head general talked about being ready for 3 wars, it sounds like a joke.

The rational thing to do

i suppose i am just in disbelief that the rational thing could in fact be occuring
