"the recent shooting" ? You'll have to be more specific. Was this in Palestine?

[-] Gold_E_Lox@lemmy.dbzer0.com 23 points 2 weeks ago

second white person shot by police in two weeks in the US

[-] abbadon420@sh.itjust.works 12 points 2 weeks ago

This is such a weird sentence to say out loud.

[-] DavidDoesLemmy@aussie.zone 8 points 2 weeks ago

You got that from "the recent shooting"? What about recent shootings in other countries?

[-] Gold_E_Lox@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 2 weeks ago

We have to teach the USA folks that not everything revolves around them. They will have to get used to it anyway.

Tbf Gold_E_Lox was being snarky in the first place

[-] UltraGiGaGigantic@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 weeks ago

Why is their race important?

[-] discocactus@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

Because other races of people have been getting shot constantly and it's only now that (white) people seem to be outraged. (Not me I've been outraged for years).

For now. .world mods are deleting these like crazy, but the guy has a website and is asking for contributions. https://crimesofice.org/

[-] deranger@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 weeks ago

What are you referring to with “these”?

Depends on the country. There are many US specific communities like https://lemmy.ml/c/usa

Mods there remove videos they don't like. I had one up of a suspected agent provocateur burning a flag at a protest and then trying to disappear but the protestors corner him. It got a lot of attention and mods randomly removed it saying fuck the American flag

[-] FrostyTrichs@crazypeople.online 2 points 2 weeks ago

It wasn't an endorsement of their policies, just a place that the videos you asked about have been popping up.

[-] Melvin_Ferd@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Got it. What I'm looking for is something like we had in the past. Place where you can post videos, clips or have discussions on current events. Mods seem very different in the past 5 years. Everything is extremely boxed in. For example if I saw a video of Jon Stewart that was giving a great speech, where could I post that here on lemme? I've been in this situation a few times and it looks like I could maybe find a jon Stewart community with 6 people but there isn't really a community to post the random stuff we come across and it's killing a lot of momentum in my mind to get leftist communities up and going.

One community might be strictly clips only and only clips that are about a narrow subject. Another community is strictly headlines online and about a narrow subject. Another community are meme focused but memes with only skeletons in it. But then there's a community for meme but without skeletons. If you post a skeleton meme, banned. Like this moderation and community-based policing i think seemed like a nice idea to keep it orderly, but i feel we're losing real community and I'm searching for places that get it.

I understand your frustration! Unfortunately I don't have an easy answer.

The culture on Lemmy can cause a fair bit of confusion at first. We have this phenomenon where people migrate here and want to have all the niche communities that existed where they came from without the users required to maintain those places. As a result we have a lot of communities with little to no interaction because it's usually just one or two people contributing. The situation you're describing is a pretty common example of this.

If you're looking for existing communities you may have better luck finding them on Lemmyverse. If you still don't find the type of place you're looking for, you might consider creating a community for the more generalized content you want to share. If that isn't something you feel comfortable taking on alone, maybe others would be willing to help you run it and keep things active. Lemmy is full of people looking for places to participate!

If you have a vision, make it yourself. That's what we need here anyway.

[-] Melvin_Ferd@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Yea and I know logically that makes sense. But also it's fucked that we had this a decade ago. It was great. How we lost it so, I'm not sure. Moderation kind of evolved and stole our right to police communities for us. Now it's used on major platforms to push them all to the right and leftist Got fucked by mods

Greed. Aaron died in prison, remember. Over copyright violation charges.

100% and he was just the person that represented a much bigger effort by the government to reign the internet and data and information under their control.

Unfortunately it’s a Twitter link but here’s a video of the shooting.

On Lemmy? The local Lemmy communities for the communities most impacted. Currently, most of what I see if on https://midwest.social/c/usa@midwest.social.

Outside of Lemmy?
mastodon.social
This is where I have found most raw footage, plus stabilized and slowed footage.

The local news stations for that area has the more verified info plus overviews.
Snapchat map for that area show some of the improvised barricades and troop movements.

Not a Lemmy resource, but if you do want reasonably unbiased news that gets suppressed - especially in certain countries, Wikipedia does cover some of it - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal:Current_events

[-] daannii@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Honestly I use Instagram a lot and it's full of personal videos. They get shared over and over and it's hard to get them removed. So they are generally on there.
