Not a fan of it for advanced stuff but Gimp puts text on image admirably and fills all my cropping needs

What sort of "advanced stuff"? The only complaint I have about it is that none of its selection tools quite match how well Photoshop's Magic Wand tool works for cutting things out.

GIMP gets most of my needs covered. I've struggled to make good video memes with Kdenlive but it's possible too.

Inkscape. One may insert images and bold text with outlines for memes.
