Hackernews is a VC-funded website for techbros who want to feel like they're cool and smarty hackers. It has an even higher percentage of know-it-alls than reddit. MBAs who got into it for the money.

I gave two conference talks this year. In fursuit.

If that isn't a flex I don't know what is

Earlier this week, I announced the immediate availability of a reference implementation for the Public Key Directory–a project I’ve been working on since June 2024. Hundreds of people shared it on Mastodon and BlueSky. Comparatively, almost nobody on Hacker News ever saw it.

I'll admit I missed this despite it being posted in !technology@lemmy.world. Lumping Masto and Bluesky together here is weird though given the Masto post got 300+ boosts while the Blusky post got 25 reposts.

Oh, fair. I just remember getting a LOT of notifications from both apps. I didn't check the exact ratio,

Its shocking how many people want to push the "mastodon is a dead platform, bluesky is the future".

I mean, Bluesky is essentially a Twitter replacement, so it's not like many people are going to be on there for tech/FOSS news. Every user on Mastodon knows what the Fediverse is, which means they're disproportionately more likely to care about FOSS and tech, therefore they're gonna spread the word more. Especially since most Fediverse users know the negatives of being on centralized social media, so they won't make a Bluesky account because they have a Fediverse account that will never be stuck on a enshittified platform. Therefore all the tech nerds are here instead of Bluesky anyway.

We have tech nerds. We don't have celebrities and "hit tweets"/jokes/memes that are getting screenshotted and dispersed to millions. Which is both a positive, but also a negative. Fediverse could do with more silly "hit tweets" (toots? posts.) that encourage people to join. ~~I just want fanartists personally~~

~~Upvoted for the striked out portion~~

That is fair, though my comment was more because everyone I have talked to IRL that knows about mastodon thinks its a dead platform, because people they know that use bluesky have told them as much.

We have a few fanartists, depends of the fandom you are looking for

I don't think I'd lump lobste.rs in with hackernews, as it has always been basically a mostly sane alternative to hackernews.

[-] Soatok@pawb.social 6 points 1 month ago

Until the mods randomly decide to censor you, like they did with my post about tech companies disrespecting user consent.

[-] zod000@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 month ago

Well, I did say mostly sane. I've been on the site longer than most/all of the admins and have never had an issue, but I don't post often. I know one of the current admins is a Google employee, so maybe they feel the need to defend their evil provider.

[-] Soatok@pawb.social 1 points 1 month ago

You're thinking of the wrong admin lol

hate bait.
Proper headline:

Soatok: I am still working on COCKTAIL-DKG. Here are my tasks [still left to complete].

[-] Soatok@pawb.social 4 points 1 month ago

No, that's like 20% of the blog post. This was a "2025 Retrospective" blog post. I always try to give a fun title to my end-of-year blogs. 2024's was https://soatok.blog/2024/12/18/the-better-daemons-of-our-profession/

This could have been a meaningful post were it not for the author somehow thinking hackernews should put furry posts on their frontpage.
