Didn't this game's creator say that a given update was the last content update quite a few times already?

[-] Kayday@lemmy.world 118 points 4 months ago

Same as the Terraria devs, yeah.
Glad he's found a passion project that makes him happy!

[-] Railcar8095@lemmy.world 49 points 4 months ago

Terraria is going to keep adding versions until they jump to 2.0

To be honest, compared to 1.0, is almost a different game

[-] glimse@lemmy.world 16 points 4 months ago

Not looking for a full changelog or anything but what would you say have been some of the most significant changes over the years?

[-] Railcar8095@lemmy.world 29 points 4 months ago

I mean, the original release had Skeletron as the final boss, which is not even the last one before hardmode now.

So 7 or 8 bosses, wings, "classes" (specialized equipment) including summoner with wasn't a thing at all, new weapon types like yoyos, expert mode, several biomes, many events and mini games, town building, NPCs, modding support...

[-] glimse@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago

Ahh ok I've played since most of those were added but not the mini games or towns. Might have to give it another play this winter

[-] ech@lemmy.ca 5 points 4 months ago

Fyi, the next "last" update is expected to drop mid to late January (though it's been delayed multiple years at this point). If that's something you'd want to wait for.

[-] blind3rdeye@aussie.zone 4 points 4 months ago

In this particular update, they've said that it will not be the last. But yeah, January is highly likely.

It feels so bad how long it has been delayed. As you say, its been years now. But that's not because it keeps getting delayed over and over. It's only really been postponed once. The original release date was dropped because they decided to increase the scope, and then their feature-creep seemed to get out of hand. But I think that by far the biggest reason for the delay is the death of one of their team members. In that small tight-knit team it has caused a lasting malaise and loss of focus; understandably so, I think.

In any case, I'm looking forward to that update. Terraria is a great game.

[-] ech@lemmy.ca 3 points 4 months ago

I hadn't heard about the death. That's awful :(

Fwiw, my note about the delay wasn't a complaint, just a setting of expectations. I think it's amazing that they're still doing this much support, essentially for free, for so long. I'll take it whenever they manage to get it out. Super grateful for the whole team.

[-] glimse@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

Hey, thanks for the heads up. I will definitely wait until then

[-] kuberoot@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 4 months ago

modding support

As far as I know, terraria only supports resource packs, changing textures, sounds, text, that kinda stuff, right? tModLoader is a community project made by fans, and the game devs' contributions to that are in the domain of being receptive, supporting it being on steam, and potentially answering questions or making small changes to facilitate mods.

But on the topic of changes, can't forget how they added new content and put it behind a new difficulty, and then ended up doing that again. And then they added a special seed that has new content that bumps up the difficulty another level.

[-] TrousersMcPants@lemmy.world 8 points 4 months ago

I think he has also said that there are other people working on the game now and he is mostly focusing on his new game iirc. So it sounds like he has just passed the torch and we're gonna get more Stardew content forever lol

[-] dxc@sh.itjust.works 24 points 4 months ago

I just read the announcement. He's working solo on Haunted Chocolatier and says this about Stardew

with 1.7 I have been trying to take more of a “creative director” role in the team, so that (at least for now) I can focus the vast majority of my attention on Haunted Chocolatier.

and also

in order for me to maintain a full connection to the game, I need my hand to touch every piece of new content. And there are some aspects of content development which I insist on doing myself, like the music.

[-] TheRealKuni@piefed.social 24 points 4 months ago

That was the last update where he was doing all the work, I think. Heavy lifting on newer updates is done by his employees now. His primary focus is Haunted Chocolatier, though he does approve everything that goes into Stardew Valley.

[-] ech@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 months ago

Is it a problem if he did?

For fuck's sake CA, please let me give you my money

[-] bonenode@piefed.social 29 points 4 months ago

You can always buy another copy from a different shop.

[-] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 10 points 4 months ago

Or make 2 accounts

[-] tulwinn@startrek.website 4 points 4 months ago

And buy the soundtrack!

[-] starman2112@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 months ago

I'm out of shops at this point

[-] Zorque@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

I think I have it on every game system I have, unless they released an N64 version...

[-] zqwzzle@lemmy.ca 22 points 4 months ago

Can’t you buy another copy as a gift on some stores (thinking steam here)?

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago

I have two steam copies and a Playstation copy. I have given a lot already

[-] DoucheBagMcSwag@lemmy.dbzer0.com 52 points 4 months ago

FFS just make The haunted chocolatier a paid DLC for Stardew at this point

[-] TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world 11 points 4 months ago

it's not going to be nearly as good or as popular... so it's kind of a lost cause compared to the way bigger impact these DLC updates have

[-] cheers_queers@lemmy.zip 4 points 4 months ago

idk i have been waiting for years :(

[-] Ashtear@piefed.social 5 points 4 months ago

Someone just needs to clone him so he can actually finish the new game.

[-] starman2112@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 months ago

We would get new updates for Stardew twice as fast then lol

[-] saltnotsugar@lemmy.world 48 points 4 months ago

CA is such a great developer and I have no idea what I did to deserve him.

[-] Isolde@lemmy.world 39 points 4 months ago

Now, now.

He belongs to us all.

[-] Sunsofold@lemmings.world 35 points 4 months ago

He's still going. This is the kind of person we need in every field.

[-] CoffeeTails@lemmy.world 18 points 4 months ago

ooooh, that's exiting! Maybe I should give it a go again. It's been ages since I played last time

Before or after chocolate game?

[-] ComfortableRaspberry@feddit.org 51 points 4 months ago

I feel like Haunted Chocolatier will become our version of Half Life 3

[-] ech@lemmy.ca 3 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Nah. I'm sure SD had a similar development time, we're just aware of it at this point, so it feels "delayed".

It'll be done when it's done. Declaring it a lost cause just because the solo Dev hasn't whipped it up in a year or two is misguided, to say the least.

[-] HotsauceHurricane@lemmy.world 14 points 4 months ago

[-] starman2112@sh.itjust.works 5 points 4 months ago

All I wish for is Clint to get an online girlfriend, my wife to be able to hang out with her friends again, and the cute Joja cashier to move into town

[-] Tikiporch@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

An overall Joja redemption arc.
