golfballs come with different amount of "dents" those fuckers are not normed outside of their minimum weight and diameter, and evey kind of ball has to be tested to be allowed for tournament golf.

those dents might not be spread evenly across the ball to get specific flight behaviour and thus this wont be a fair die in most cases.

help me, i never swung a golf club in my life why do i know shit about golf ball!

People pay so much for these fancy balls, and they're not even symmetrical?!?

That should be like a major marketing point! Consistency in a "sport" is important.

[-] Dunstabzugshaubitze@feddit.org 7 points 3 months ago

they might be symmetrical, but the dimples themselves are often grouped together in patterns or even vary in size. golfballs are crazy, i don't like them.

How do they make them?

I would have thought something like that could come out of a mold, and so all of them would be the same.

[-] scratchee@feddit.uk 15 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

All the same from 1 manufacturer, at least for the same model.

But different manufacturers use different patterns, and even the same manufacturer may change their designs.

I also do not play golf, I know this from maths and physics videos on YouTube.

yes, two balls of the same model will be the same and they are afaik made with molds and many balls will have an aequator where no dimples are placed to ease that process.

i just remember being surprised that not more measurements of the balls are specified for tournament use and if a model is tournament legal boils mostly down to a set of standardized tests by golf associations.

Small core, wrapped in a long rubber band, wrapped with outer plastic lining.

But numbers should be spread more uniformly, not in a sequence!

Unless you have a hash table. A hash table with a ratchet on non-blind throws is a fun way to mess with player's bad habits.

[-] edgemaster72@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago

It's a spindown die for mid to high level boss monster HP

[-] msage@programming.dev 2 points 3 months ago

I'm sorry, what is hash table in this context?

[-] Khanzarate@lemmy.world 5 points 3 months ago

I'm reasonably sure it'd be a list of numbers that just translate.actual die rolls to a new set.

123456 416352

Roll a natural 6 on a d6, look at that simple table, you got a 2. Roll a natural 3, get a 6.

Ratcheting the table would be moving a row, so ratcheting this table by 1 would make it

123456 163524

So now you have a new arrangement.

Thank you so much!

[-] alzymologist@sopuli.xyz 1 points 3 months ago

Yeah, except my players were usually quite badass math people, so I get to use reasonably strong crypto (well, not proper crypto, but strong enough against manual attack) stuff for ratcheting. Often it was just OTP (when I'm being lazy). Then everyone just got annoyed with math arms race and we stopped using dice almost entirely.

We bought our kid a D120 a few years back (at their request). https://www.mathartfun.com/thedicelab.com/d120.html

Thanks for helping me liberate about $100 before breakfast.

[-] Tolookah@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 3 months ago

Their skew and slant dice are wild looking and fun to have. (Sorry for your wallet)

[-] psud@aussie.zone 2 points 3 months ago

I have a zocchihedron d100 :)

[-] kryptonianCodeMonkey@lemmy.world 15 points 3 months ago

Unbalanced. Only rolls 1s 0.3057% of the time instead of 0.3058% as expected.

[-] FauxLiving@lemmy.world 5 points 3 months ago

Literally unplayable

[-] Jeeve65@ttrpg.network 10 points 3 months ago

You roll it, it drops off the table and stops 15 ~~yards~~ meters away–if you're lucky. Or the cat thinks you finally have time for them and playfully pushes the ~~ball~~ die under the couch.

I think my d30 is good enough.

[-] Kefla@hexbear.net 5 points 3 months ago

The cat's just calling you out for fudging rolls. Do better.
