Her acting and chemistry with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau was the best and most consistent part of the show

[-] reddig33@lemmy.world 41 points 3 months ago

Disappointing that they didn’t do more with her Star Wars stormtrooper character.

[-] oyo@lemmy.zip 17 points 3 months ago

To be fair it's hard to find something in those movies that wasn't disappointing.

[-] TheJesusaurus@sh.itjust.works 16 points 3 months ago

It was never really a character it was just a merchandising opportunity.

[-] Taco2112@lemmy.world 5 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

To be fair, George Lucas didn’t do much with Boba Fett either and Darth Maul, dead in the only movie he’s in. Star Wars has always had some interesting characters that get no back story and then are just gone.

[-] invertedspear@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 months ago

Maul is not dead (at that point) and is in more than one movie. The question is, will there be any further movies that don’t focus on the Skywalker family?

[-] Taco2112@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

I know he’s not dead, same with Boba Fett but all that stuff is explored in books and TV shows. Which of the other eight main movies was Maul in after Phantom Menace?

[-] invertedspear@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 months ago

He was in the standalone Solo movie, as an end-credit teaser. Episodes 1-9 are all Skywalker saga. Only Rogue One and Solo get away from that family, and not far. But those two movies do more to expand the Star Wars universe than 7-9 do.

you're too unconventional looking

Whoever said that to her should be punched in the mouth. She's hot.

[-] Taleya@aussie.zone 13 points 3 months ago

Studio execs like small, malleable women they can potentially pressure into couch castings.

[-] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago

along these lines I'd pay decent money to watch her beat the everlasting shit out of a shitbag like harvey weinstein

[-] Ilandar@lemmy.today 10 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

unconventional

different from what is usual or from the way most people do things

Is this not a fairly accurate description of her appearance? You might think she's hot, but it's objective reality that very tall, strong women are uncommon and generally considered less attractive in modern, Western societies. It's not even just aboit attractiveness, it's about whether audiences will find her relatable/believable in certain types of roles when her physique is so unusual..

[-] BurningRiver@beehaw.org 7 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Not the person you replied to, but I take exception with the word “too” in front of unconventional.

Obviously we know now that she was perfect in the role of Brienne. The main reason (for me, anyway) why film and tv largely suck now is because studios want the “safe” and “conventional” choice for every role. I’m also well over 6 feet tall, I want my tall queens well represented on the screen.

ETA: tall men don’t seem to have a problem getting roles. The stigma against tall women is just dumb to me.

[-] Ilandar@lemmy.today 4 points 3 months ago

That's because tall men are considered conventionally attractive.

[-] BurningRiver@beehaw.org 1 points 3 months ago

Maybe more men should be taller.

I know how that sounds, and that’s the same as saying more women should be “conventional looking”, whatever the fuck that means.

[-] teft@piefed.social 1 points 3 months ago

That’s the issue i had with it. The “too” seems harsh. She’s legit hot just big.

[-] BurningRiver@beehaw.org 1 points 3 months ago

I figured as much, and I was pretty sure I caught your angle on it, but I didn’t want to speak for you.

[-] Mellow12@lemmy.world 29 points 3 months ago

She fucking killed it as Lucifer in Sandman. I hope they do something with Constantine Hellblazer and bring her back as Lucifer.

[-] ook@discuss.tchncs.de 19 points 3 months ago

She was awesome in Severance too!

[-] CobblerScholar@lemmy.world 14 points 3 months ago

And she killed it in Sandman. Real shame the author is a POS

[-] njm1314@lemmy.world 11 points 3 months ago

She was very good on Wednesday I remember thinking.

[-] Codilingus@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 months ago

Kind of a spoiler:

!She's in Wednesday season 2, quite a lot, and still does a fantastic job! !<

[-] p03locke@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 3 months ago

Neil Newbon was unconventional, so he made it big in voice acting. Owen Wilson broke his nose, threw out convention, and didn't bother with plastic surgery. Steve Buscemi, Willem Dafoe, John Malkovich, and many others don't look "conventional".

I'm thinking that conventionality is overrated and unnecessary as a casting decision.

[-] njm1314@lemmy.world 38 points 3 months ago

You'll notice those are all men though right? It's a bit different. Shouldn't be but it is.

[-] TheJesusaurus@sh.itjust.works 21 points 3 months ago

Please tell me you see the difference?

[-] Ilandar@lemmy.today 8 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Yes, but there also needs to be the roles available. Villain roles for ugly/creepy men are everywhere and have been throughout history. Roles for tall, strong women have generally been very rare.

[-] shalafi@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

And casting still didn't pick an ugly woman. Brienne of Tarth was supposed to be pretty (heh) hard to look at. Course Tyrion was supposed to be even uglier.

[-] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 7 points 3 months ago

I always loved that character. So, cheers to Gwendoline Christie 🥂
