Excellent news. Let’s keep it up and buckle down even more. This is the best (only?) way to send a message.
I hate to break it to you, but Americans will never receive/understand that message.
This. Generations of American exceptionalism has been baked into nearly every facet their being, culture, politics, and ways of life - piggybacking straight off a century of British imperial exceptionalism.
The US will need to fall and fall hard before they even begin to start thinking about changing their ways and even then it's not guaranteed.
Less money, no jobs is what they understand. Whether they want to hear it is another thing.
They won't even understand that.
Soy farmers are baffled as to why:
- China isn't buying American soy beans anymore.
- Brazil is now the chief external source of soy beans for China.
- Brazilian farmers are buying Chinese farming equipment instead of American.
On that last point they're expressing the belief that China is somehow forcing Brazilian farmers to use cheaper … higher quality … ah … more capable and … ah … not locked-down by enshittification … tractors?
They genuinely do not get it, even when their farms are facing foreclosure! And they still vote for the ill-tempered old-age toddler who did it to them.
The strangest part of this article to me, is at the end where the journalist seems to imply all we need is a sign of good faith from America at this point, and it'll all blow over. Horseshit.
America going fascist is a 'rupture', because it's a clear sign that the traditional world trade order is done -- even if the dems get in next time around, the repubs will flip and burn all bridges when they get back. America is manic, and not a trustworthy trade partner. The way to repair that damaged reputation, is to go back to being sane for decades, not for a one time concession. Like even when the dems come back into power, I see no reason we ought to trust them -- and I see no reason the dems would think we would, frankly, given how dysfunctional the system has proven.
As a Canadian, I'll happily continue avoiding US products until there's been some serious changes made, and/or I've seen a long period of sanity from our southern neighbours. I honestly don't think that'll happen in my lifetime. They're out there blowing up civilian boats, boasting about committing war crimes, censoring their comedians for really modest criticism of the administration, cheering as musk goose-steps around nazi saluting, calling for the destruction of Canada both at the administration level and on fox... like why the hell would I overlook all that?
I think it's worth pointing out that much of the US Democrat party has been assisting with the fascist takeover. There are some outspoken individuals that are still holding out, being outspoken and trying to fight it, but so many of the GOP's bullshit bills have been pushed through with either Democrat silence or even outright capitulation. Outside of a few outspoken Democratic governors, there really is no party leadership or even a sense of direction at all.
The US is nearly a single-party country at this point.
America is our little North Korea.
I wish I could do the same. Hard to do when you live here!
Hopefully our leadership get the message and make better attempts to do the same.
