For this Friday Movie Night, first up is Manila in the Claws of Light (1975), a Philippine drama about a rural fisherman who goes into the big city to look for his missing girlfriend. Where did she go? He doesn’t know, but he does know that his time in Manila makes him feel alienated as his quest makes him descend further into the city’s seedy underbelly. This is generally considered the magnum of director Lino Brocka, and one of the best Philippine films of all time.

After that is Wait Until Dark (1967), a thriller about a blind housewife (Audrey Hepburn) whose husband brings her a doll from a business trip. Uh-oh, turns out the doll is full of heroin, and some bad guys are willing to go to extreme lengths to get it back. The husband leaves on another trip, leaving the blind woman at the mercy of a bunch of sickos. How will she get out of this one? I guess we’ll find out. Director is Terence Young, the guy better-known for directing three of the first four James Bond films (Dr. No [1962], From Russia with Love [1963], and Thunderball [1965]). This is considered arguably his best work, and one of the best thrillers of the 60s, so let’s check it out.
