Other than a house or car, what's the most expensive purchase you ever made?

Real talk. My mom spent that much on her first new car; my grandparents spent 1/3 on buying land and building a house. I got heat for 110m2.
I got a new one a couple years ago. Was like $25k. That wasn’t even with all the top of the line options either.
And it's probably only $5000 worth of parts.
I kinda count that as house expense - if I didn't have this house, I wouldn't have had to replace the HVAC, windows, etc. so to me it just compounds on the purchase price of the property itself.

It was a carbon fiber bike that was less than 20 lbs. You could pick it up by the top tube with your pinky and balance it there. The bike with wheels and all came in around $5k. At the time i didn't have a car and used bike to go everywhere including shopping, so i wanted to have a second "nice" bike for fun riding and i used my old bike for normal commutes.

They actually don't. Most pro bikes weigh closer to 20lbs. These guys descend mountains at 90 mph, sprint at 45 mph, they are not going to risk their lives over what amounts to a few sips of water. The 14.99 number is for dentists.
Great Akctually, except, well, the answer is somewhere in the middle. It would have been more correct for me to hedge my language and say pro bikes can be lighter. This was my fatal flaw.
Also since we're going to be pedantic then bike weight is also dependent on the course. The link i gave above even talks about how bikes are optimized for the day's riding.

Does a roof and windows count? Or, do those fall under the "house" heading? That was around $20k all done.
Finishing the basement was around $15k, though that's certainly under the house.
Then there's the septic tank we had to replace, that was about $10k.
The cost of a home isn't done with just the mortgage.
I would say the stipulation is everything directly related to a house.

A new HVAC system cost me about 20k, but if that falls under "house" it would go to the 12k CNC machine.
That's really tough. I think it was my water heater. It's a heat pump one so it's more expensive upfront but will heat more efficiently.
I also got the heat pump water heater, and it does a lot of things. It cools your house during the summer. It saves you on electricity. For me, the saving is between 30 and 50 US dollars every month.
And my power company was offering a $500 cash rebate if you purchased one, so for me it was like $1,300 and then I spent $500 on all the parts and pieces I needed to get it installed, but I installed it myself with the help of a friend.
All of the plumbers in the area wanted two or three thousand dollars to install it, which is highway robbery.
I get screwed on power rebates because I get it through my city which is municipal wholesale instead of the power company directly.
That sounds like a Texas thing to me. My dad lived in a town that is close to Austin, and their city power infrastructure was just fucking terrible.
I don't really have any problems with that, it's still mostly okay, it's even still Georgia Power technically, but because it's through the city I can't use their "energy saving marketplace" or whatever.

My sailboat, 20k. More than I’ve ever spent on a boat (or a car), but very worth it to us. It’s our cabin, retirement home, project, and happy place. Of course, we discovered after that the previous owner, bless his heart, hadn’t sealed a cable running through the deck properly and now the whole cabin top is rotten. So that will be a big job to fix. Luckily I can fix that myself, but my heart definitely sank when I discovered it.

I once built a 3000 € PC. Can't think of anything more expensive. I will never invest into SLI again. It was totally useless. Made more problems than anything.

Definitely the wedding by a long shot. And mostly because we paid for a venue where we could house a bunch of guests coming from out of state.
Well at work I ordered misc PC hardware for ~200k USD equivalent semi-regularly. And once I was the only one present who was an actual full time employee, so I signed the documents for chartering a survey ship for a month.
On the private I think it's my PC. Come to think of it, my three largest expenses have all been PCs. After that it's a guitar.
Bold of you to assume I can afford a house or a car... for me, it's definitely an academic degree, though I'm not sure that counts as a "purchase".
