Man, I swear I was just reading an article about the other day about how the United States has already lost the AI race due to our failing electrical grid.

Apparently, China can already produce double the amount of power they need, and they're working on major green energy projects that will increase their energy production by double what they currently make.

China's trying to target by 2030-something to be completely off coal power.

techcels getting mogged by oilchads

[-] Beaver@hexbear.net 24 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Stuff like this makes me wonder if the tech billionaires might be losing control of the ship of state. It simultaneously threatens both the AI stock market bubble that makes up most of their assets, and their investments in the real economy that rely on cheap energy. Their whole strategy of scooping up cheap assets during a downturn doesn't work if the US economy is de-developed to the point where it can no longer generate profits, and if they're locked out of China. Is it just pure ideology that's blinding them, or have they created a monster they can't control?

[-] dastanktal@hexbear.net 19 points 9 months ago

It's a monster they can't control because they only look at a quarter ahead. They don't make multi-year plans for long-term investment. They want maximum profit in short-term investments. If they're not increasing their short-term profits, the company will lose value in their stock, and the people in control of that company, the people that invest in that company will lose money, which is something they don't want. So there is no incentive, in fact, there's an incentive against this type of long-term investing since it will make the balance sheet per quarter look worse when they start their long-term investment project.

I added the link to my original post, but here is the news community thread:

America is America's own worst enemy, and I'm all for that, except that part where I'm here and so are my loved ones thurston

[-] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 27 points 9 months ago

Probably the least harmful (but still chaotic thing) would be just full American balkanization.

I’ll see you libs in the people’s republic of cascadia after we kick out the hogs in the forest. Let the chuds ruin their own communities through their pig-headedness.

[-] Grapho@lemmy.ml 24 points 9 months ago

The only thing that makes me nervous about an organic rather than an enforced balkanization of the US is that we'd have a handful of nuclear states as rabid as Israel with a ready made cuban missile crisis times 10

[-] ThermonuclearEgg@hexbear.net 7 points 9 months ago

Info: How bad would things be for the rest of the planet if the Balkanized remnants of the US used the nukes on each other?

[-] Euergetes@hexbear.net 12 points 9 months ago

quite. removing US food production directly and unpredictable ash/winter conditions everywhere else

[-] Grapho@lemmy.ml 14 points 9 months ago

Plus there's bound to be one of the kookier states having a Samson option or straight up thinking the scientists are fucking morons and the bombs should be dropped on the ground instead of in the air and boom, nuclear fallout (🫵🏾😧) for decades at the least.

[-] Sebrof@hexbear.net 10 points 9 months ago

The evangelists of the Heavenly Kingdom of the ArkLaTex would definitely nuke the world to bring Jesus back

[-] Grapho@lemmy.ml 7 points 9 months ago

ArkLaTex sounds like the second worst way to write equations to pdf

[-] Sebrof@hexbear.net 5 points 9 months ago

I like LaTeX deeper-sadness

[-] Sebrof@hexbear.net 9 points 9 months ago

Akktually Nordhaus proved that agricultural collapse caused by climate change would only reduce global GDP by 1-2%.

Far from "economic collapse" you looney leftists keep crying about. What are you, a farmer? i-cant

And the ash will help cool the Earth anyway.

smuglord

(/s just in case the insanity isn't glaringly obvious to all)

[-] Sebrof@hexbear.net 14 points 9 months ago

Yeah I'm for revolution first (even though that happening in hellhole America feels like a fantasy at times) but if balkanization gets the boot off the rest of the world's neck then bring it. Whatever I may suffer, the rest of the has a million times over at the hands of this demonic entity I find myself in.

But, like Grapho said, there are those nukes.

But also, its not like I trust the rabid dying empire with them either.

“We will not approve wind or farmer destroying Solar,” Trump, who has complained in the past that solar takes up too much land, posted on Truth Social. “The days of stupidity are over in the USA!!!”

The US is an exercise in hilarity intermixed with absolutely ruinous decisions.

[-] AernaLingus@hexbear.net 51 points 9 months ago

geordi-no [The days of stupidity] [are over] [in the USA]!!!

takes up too much land

America is famously running out of land and space.

[-] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 6 points 9 months ago

Based on what I've seen from American history, bad things happen when they think they need more land and space.

“Pig” cannot be a better animal motif for the American capitalist.

Not only as a ever-consuming hedonistic glutton, but also in the phrase pig-headed.

Solar panels were fucking INVENTED in the US and we’re not using them for some sentimental ideological reason that you’re “supposed” to use fossil fuels. Alberta became a fucking one-trick pony in its economy because of that and is stuck doing so despite its massive solar potential.

Fuck porky full and full. Even other, possibly even well-meaning capitalists get burned by the porks.

[-] MayoPete@hexbear.net 20 points 9 months ago

I wish we had a better comparison than pig. Those little guys are so cute 🐖🐷

[-] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 18 points 9 months ago

feral-hog <- I could never hate this little guy.

On the flipside, the pejorative ‘hog’ is way too funny for me to ever give up.

[-] Carl@hexbear.net 17 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

I always think of a particular scene from The West Wing when I imagine America's stubborn refusal to go green, where a couple of solar energy lobbyists/activists try to convince Bartlet to build a big solar plant and it's basically played for laughs because their idea is so silly. Bear in mind this was the lib show about the lib president and even in their wildest fantasies libs couldn't imagine a president signing on to a project that would achieve full energy independence and create ten thousand well paying jobs.

(then a decade later China startsled investing in green energy at a massive scale and hey what do you know two decades later they make 80% of the world's solar cells and it's a sector that employs hundreds of thousands of Chinese people)

[-] dkr567@hexbear.net 15 points 9 months ago

I remember hearing "it's a pig country with pig culture and pig people" when describing america and I could not find any better explanation with respect to America and its lust for destructive capitalism.

[-] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 12 points 9 months ago

In our defense, there are so many people here who are cool as shit and don’t deserve this as well. That being said, the porks of the American ruling class are the porkiest porks to ever pork.

[-] marxisthayaca@hexbear.net 14 points 9 months ago

yes, it kills white people most often.

[-] Grapho@lemmy.ml 28 points 9 months ago

I think I'm missing about four grams of lead in my brain to understand what the fuck porky thinks will happen if they alone refuse to use the cheapest, most abundant, safest form of electricity currently available.

What the fuck is the game plan? Just go "nu uh" and just like that everyone wants to go back to buying gas from you? I usually can kind of see the rationale but I deadass don't see any way this makes sense

[-] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 27 points 9 months ago

The oil companies who are bribing the government will still have customers when the rest of the world's on renewable energy- all the Americans who are forced to

[-] Grapho@lemmy.ml 19 points 9 months ago

I was gonna say "sure, but what's the plan once the consequences of this copper stripping scheme make it so it's cheaper to wipe your ass with dollars than using them to buy paper?" But I remembered time ends at the next quarter.

[-] burlemarx@lemmygrad.ml 16 points 9 months ago

Most of the big industrialists are also people in the financial industry. They are concerned only with short term profit, so they are taking advantage of the fact oil and gas are still the main sources of power, and will lobby all the governments to keep that because that way their profits will be maintained. While their profits soar, they will use their profit to buy other financial assets, like real estate or other industries. When oil and gas cease to be profitable, they will abandon it like when they did it with Detroit factories.

This is the thing with today's neoliberal capitalism. Everything is only seen as financial asset. There's no strategical thinking a plan to develop and modernize you country. There's only rent seeking and a tech industry that owns more money through hype and speculation than in actual deliveries. See the richest man in the world, Elon Musk, most of his capital is just speculative, most of his companies are failing to deliver actual tangible results, most of his gains is from hype.
