I will be going to Japan for a couple of weeks and was talking to a friend about the Japanese far right movement taking a page from MAGA, of course. It made me wonder about Japan's trajectory as an axis member during WWII, committing atrocities in Asia to being nuked by the US, and now the number one holder of US treasuries. It's a fascinating history to me but also realize I have big holes in my understanding of Japan, how did this all happen? Was there a Japanese denazification after WWII or was it about as effective as it was in Germany? germany-cool nato-cool

If anyone has any good insightful reads about Japan and also any travel tips, I appreciate you!

I'm nowhere near an expert on this and am largely retelling what I've learned from an expat. As I understand it, after WW2 the US released thought criminals from prisons and jailed the war criminals, but then this led to a resurgence in leftist thought which had the US freaking out and Reverse Course aka the Reverse Occupation.

Pre-WW2, might wanna read about the Rice Riots of 1918. Also, the Tiasho era 1912 to 1926 had a weak emperor so there wasn't a lot of top down repression which allowed for a lot of grassroots organizing.

Here's a Jacobin article on The Heroic Origins of Japanese Socialism
