We've been going through decades of Superman mostly just being a super god beyond the king of ultra-super gods while occasionally pining after a lost kingdom and race that he can't retvrn to, so I think a lot of the original concept is functionally lost in pop culture except on the most superficial level, and that's speaking of the comic books. In the movies, there's much less of the original legacy to start with and things sometimes get changed to make the message or at least the emotional logic of the story wildly more fascist (like Thanos getting a nonsensical eco-fash motivation to be more sympathetic, even if he's still supposed to be very evil).

Does OP mean hawkgirl? Because hawkgirl is canonically in a heterosexual relationship. It's one of the main points of her character that she is destined to be with a dude.
Honestly their souls just need to be reincarnated and fall in love, gender can change in reincarnation in most religions right? Now I want the comics to give us a look at either a same sex Hawks, or the souls in the opposite gender. A woman born with Katar Hol's soul and a man born with Shayera's soul.
