Prominent Zionist leaders in British Palestine were all there before the war, and half the population of Israel is of Middle Eastern—not European—descent. In fact at least at first (not sure if it's a thing now) Zionist Jews actively looked down on Holocaust victims and survivors as weak diaspora Jews who suffered because of their weakness, unlike strong Aliyah Jews who would never go through such a thing.
