Rowling responded to the decision by posting a picture of her having a drink and smoking a cigar, with the text “I love it when a plan comes together.”

Holy shit, she's pure evil.

Voldemort was her retirement plan after all.

I can't wait to see the research covering this level of social decline amongst her generational peers.

This is abnormal behavior

Dolores Umbridge was a self-insert.

Boycott this evil cunt! Don’t watch the movies, don’t watch the new tv series, don’t buy or read the books. I know these books influenced and inspired many people but we all need to let them go. If even one penny helps this bitch it’s too much.

There's also piracy, for those who enjoy the material but don't want to support the evil shitstain of an author.

[-] [email protected] 6 points 2 weeks ago

Agreed 🏴‍☠️

[-] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago

Idk, maybe you shouldn't be enshrining material from a jackass. Other IP exists.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago

I'm not sure what you mean by enshrining, but in any case, don't give that maggot a single cent, whether or not you partake in the content with her name on it.

[-] [email protected] 4 points 2 weeks ago

Consuming the content still grants it cultural strength and influence.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 2 weeks ago

That's true - best practice would absolutely be to completely abstain from it. Some people are die-hard about that shit though, so for those who do for some reason need a fix periodically, do so in a way that mitigates the negative impact as much as possibly - namely by finding ways to do things for free that would otherwise send income to JKR to be used for her evil bullshit.

As someone who watches crappy home-counties daytime British TV, my taste is to watch it and overthink it. Harry Potter is crap enough that I will watch it to mock it via piracy. It doesn't mean that I don't complain at anyone i know for playing that shitty video game.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 2 weeks ago

But why? Why is it so incredibly difficult for you to stop consuming that particular piece of entertainment? There is so much other entertainment in the world, most of it better even.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I don't recall implying it was difficult for me to stop: my comment wasn't directed at myself. I read the books when I was in school back in 2007 - iirc there wasn't a controversy surrounding the author back then, or if there was it was all over my head. Highschool me wasn't really paying attention to current events.

I've seen some of the movies since then, but again, if any bigotry was publicly known back then, it was over my head.

At some point, her PR disaster made it into my field of view, and I haven't engaged with the franchise since. That said, there are die-hard fans of HP, so I make the same pitch to them as I did here: If want to consume the material, do so via piracy to protect against supporting the author.

HP to me was only ever some light fantasy - the value was more in the accessibility than the quality. As you mentioned, there are probably hundreds of similar stories out there... nothing about HP was better than the competition except for the marketing. Super easy to 'quit' and not look back.

I don't understand the super-fans, but I could say the same about anything I don't have a personal interest in. People lose their shit over sports: I don't get it. But, my personal disinterest doesn't mean it'd be easy for everyone to just shrug off if the NFL or something became associated with white supremacy or some shit. If that happened, I'd make a similar pitch about pirating game footage / not buying merch, etc.

Completely abstaining would 100% be better, but people won't.

While I do agree that we shouldn't support her, boycotting really won't do anything in this case. She's a billionaire. If she stopped getting any money right this moment, she'd still have plenty left to keep hurting people for the rest of her life, and then some. We need better laws to protect the vulnerable. That's basically the only way aside from taking away her and other billionaires' wealth and redistributing it

[-] [email protected] 6 points 2 weeks ago

She may already have a lot of money, but clearly she is looking for more. Why not deny her that? And the influence it brings?

[-] [email protected] -1 points 2 weeks ago

Is she though? From the article:

“Lots of people are offering to contribute, which I truly appreciate, but there are many other women’s rights orgs that could do with the money, so donate away, just not to me!”

I'm not saying don't boycott her. I'm just pointing out that alone won't do much, if anything, to prevent her from hurting people.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago

You think that means she's not trying to make more money? The HBO show, all the merchandise, themes parks, video games, and all the rest doesn't count?

[-] [email protected] -1 points 2 weeks ago

True, though IMO these things would come her way anyway because people like the franchise and corpos take advantage of it, and many people don't know she's a bigot.

But my original point still stands. You could take all that away today, and she'd still be able to hurt people with her wealth until she croaks. She's that incredibly wealthy. Just one more reason why wealth should be capped.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 2 weeks ago

Nobody is arguing that. The point is she wants more and we can do something about that. So we should.

[-] [email protected] 15 points 2 weeks ago

Wow she's speeedrunning her villain arc huh

[-] [email protected] 10 points 2 weeks ago

Pretty sure we're just seeing what was always there under the surface, but hidden.

[-] [email protected] 7 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

It wasn't though, there's lots of ableism, racism, fatphobia, gender binary and weirdness about genitals in her books. Transphobia isn't surprising given all that.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago

So why invent poly juice potion?

[-] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago

Because she has direct quotes about how she wished she was born a boy ;)

[-] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago

Who the fook did this broad hit on that was trans and turned her down??? Where does she get this level of hatred from??? Like damn...

Bet she has a secret folder on her personal computer though iykwim

[-] [email protected] 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

It's a cult. She's a fascist and both biological and gender essentialism is useful to fascism, capitalism, tyranny and authoritarianism as it allows people to be more easily controlled. Whereas if we actually saw both sex and gender as what they are: spectrums, social constructs and ever changing along both life and through our understandings then we'd be a lot more free and those people would have less power even if, ironically, in the end they'd end up with less in the current or a fully fascist system too. They hate having less power in certain ways so they have to keep it around. That's all.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago

She has also discussed her issues with her gender growing up and she just "got over it". Same thing with a lack of desire for sex/romance. She goes after trans people, and recently started talking shit on aroace people. So, she might not have "gotten over it". Possibly this is some sort of internalize hatred, she also expresses casual misogyny on occasion as well.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago

Thanks for telling us this. It is worrying that somebody could be turned to hate so easily by this instead of getting the help they need.
