Sky pretty, been a while since a really nice sunset.

[-] [email protected] 7 points 4 days ago

It's taken a couple of weeks for the dust from that volcano in Indonesia to reach us I reckon. I remember how pretty the sunsets were after the Mt Pinatubo eruption.

[-] [email protected] 5 points 4 days ago

I thought it was dust from the Central Australian drought?

[-] [email protected] 6 points 4 days ago

Could be that too. High altitude dust is still high altitude dust.

We went to the burlesque show for our Anniversary last night. There was a best dressed prize so I told my girlfriend to find something she's never had a chance to wear and dress as gay as you can.

My logic was you dress up extravagantly as you can because there will either be someone more dressed up as you, or you win a prize.

And she won!

She felt overdressed because most of the crowd was just old people, but that meant she was the clear winner, so she had a good time and it made the night a bit more special

[-] [email protected] 5 points 4 days ago

Ooh! Love a good show off event, so few ops otherwise.

I got home incredibly late after a huge hyper focus session rewriting out my entire intro (this time with full citations) - got home past 1am and hugely apologetic to dear sox who was clearly a bit out of sorts having dislodged and chewed up a corner of a pizza box (there was plenty of dry food left for her to free feed on).

Things have been so hectic I have two weeks of laundry built up and all sorts of crap lying around. So I've spent this morning getting that done, cleaning the kitchen, doing an overdue vacuum, tidying the place up before Sox's human comes at 11. Now just waiting for the second round of laundry and... lo and behold I have been blessed with one last shnuggle.

At least I get to enjoy this last bit of quality time 😭 🙏🏽 🖤🤍🖤

E: also looks like the US has finally pulled the pin. Yaaaay... not...

Look at that healthy coat.

And the whiskers forgot to stop growing.

[-] [email protected] 8 points 4 days ago

She's astoundingly shiny regardless of what crap she gets fed by her human. Maybe she's born with it (not Maybelline). I love her medium coat length too, it's so soft but not as hard to manage as a long coat.

Question: Do you eat at the kitchen table or in the lounge room or other?

We eat at the table but tonight I was a rebel and ate in the lounge room.

[-] [email protected] 8 points 4 days ago

I dine in the East Wing conservatory.💅

[-] [email protected] 5 points 4 days ago

With the family or just you and the butler?

My dining table (which takes up a quarter of the lounge room) is usually half covered in craft stuff and school stuff because there's nowhere else to put it, so there's room for a couple of people to sit at the other end. There's also the couch, where the Minipeelers usually sit for meals. Mr P lays on his bed (in the next room) and eats dinner on a tray. It sounds weird but we are all no more than a few metres from each other. I don't invite people over because I don't want people to see how I live.

[-] [email protected] 8 points 4 days ago

I was meant to have friends over last night but they cancelled and I'm glad because my kitchen looked like a bomb had gone off. It's all better today.

Don't be too harsh on yourself. You're a working mum who puts her family first. You're doing great in my book. 🙂

[-] [email protected] 8 points 4 days ago

Thankyou! 🙂 I tell myself it won't always be this way, and one day we will have an actual whole house to live in (or I will buy an apartment or regional home and piss off) but at the moment we're living in a space that was built for one elderly person.

[-] [email protected] 4 points 4 days ago

Our big table is currently hosting a lego build, towels waiting to be folded and a tub of cake decorating stuff from me decorating my mother's birthday cake. There was still enough room for the three of us to eat dinner though.

[-] [email protected] 5 points 4 days ago

The last time I lived in a house that was large enough - my last sharehouse - there was no kitchen table, but there was a small dining room (with dining table) and a lounge room (couches and fire). I usually ate on the dining table unless I felt like staring into the fire of a cold evening. Occasionally, I would eat in my room if I was working hard on uni/work.

As a kid I used to hate eating at a table. I'd always eat in front of the computer or TV

[-] [email protected] 4 points 4 days ago

Having the option to sit in front of a fire would be awesome.

Alright, after some drama and use of a broomstick (not by me...) sox was bundled into her carrier and all her bits and pieces taken away. Made sure to eat something, finished up all the other house chores, stopped for an existential panic moment, then went to the laundromat and dried a huge load, and now I'm parked at the office willing myself to attack the method section (it needs to be dramatically shorter and replaced with some diagrams that I have on hand). I picked the easiest bit to do today because I knew the morning was a writeoff.

Wish me energy and concentration. I've had my meds, a coffee, and now a tea with a biscuit, and I still feel like burying myself in bed. I'll try and get out of here before 9pm at least and have a good night's sleep before tomorrow's new session of writing back at the uni library. I am at least relieved in the back of my head that I've now got clean clothes and a clean house again

[-] [email protected] 9 points 4 days ago

You can do this. Well done with the clothes and food while in the middle of it. That's life sorted.

Here's a sleepy sun kitty to help

[-] [email protected] 7 points 4 days ago

I wanna join sleepy sun kitty and bury my face in that glorious sun-kissed fur (even if only for 0.1 seconds)!

But no, I shall stare relentlessly at Microsoft Word

[-] [email protected] 6 points 4 days ago

You can do this. 😊

Well, after feeling insanely sleepy for a good few hours there, at some point something kicked in and I have powered through to 10pm and my methods section is pretty much 95% complete!!!

The intro is about 75% after yesterday's efforts - held back by the very late-stage discovery of a key paper that throws a whole bunch of things out and I have to incorporate into the intro and discussion. So I'm going to have to prioritise reading that, but...

...my discussion section is a total shambles.

shambles ramblesI really have neglected it completely and it's just a bunch of half-finished sentences and disorganised dot points. Really, this is the important bit of the paper so I shouldn't be rushing it, but at this point I'm going to have to summarise a lot of it as:

  • Wow, the results of A, B and C were really obvious! just like X and Y said!
  • But these things weren't so great, possibly because of the phenomenon described in Z
  • Still you should totally use C because A and B alone aren't enough
  • Also here is a scenario model which proves my point
  • But also it has 35930940249 assumptions lol
  • Future research could address all of that, but anyway, at least this thing gets the ball rolling
  • kthxbai

I think my game plan for tomorrow is to seriously flesh out the discussion section, references be damned, and get the main points/flow of discussion correct. Because I simply won't have anything even remotely submittable without that. THEN I can get into that stupid paper and figure out how much I need to wedge in and try and finish that remaining 25% of the intro...

Sigh. I was hoping I'd be done by end of Monday but I'll have to accept spending my birthday still working on this stupid thing. If I can finish by the end of Tuesday at least then I can luxuriate!

Quick mostly spoiler free movie review:

28 Years Later is really a family drama interspersed with terrifying fights for survival. Although there are some jump scares, It’s not so much a horror, but a thrilling and curious dreamlike adventure into the heart of darkness (with gorey bits of bone, flesh, and blood spattered about)

The tone is medieval and fairytale like, reminiscent of the movie “Men”, (another Alex Garland project) or even David Lowery’s “The Green Night”.

There is a folksy, cottage-core vibe here, interspersed with artistic camera flourishes and heart racing terror. Some very effective freeze-frame kill shot camera work add to memorable chase scenes. (Apparently quite a bit was shot on iPhone)

Various classes of zombie inhabit this world from fat, hippo-like slow crawling worm eaters to muscular 10 foot tall alpha males. All of the infected are suitably terrifying and deliver the goods.

The main actors played their parts dutifully with Ralph Fiennes being the most notable. He played a doctor and curious hermit covered in iodine. A kind and sympathetic man with the fortitude to live on his own, but, also deranged enough to spend years building a shrine to death itself.

The soundtrack is really cool and is used effectively throughout. Written by Scottish progressive hip hop group, Young Fathers. It’s dreadfully creepy and sounds similar to The Haxan Cloak. I found myself playing in the car later in the day.

I do have some issues with plot and storyline but won’t go into here, as not to spoil story.

I brought MissGod with me and she rates it highly.

8.5/10 skull monuments💀

It got down to 5°c last night but I did it for the team. Made a few wishes for youse so now you have to wait to see if they come true. You can thank me later for your good fortunes.

Managed to sleep in way too late.

Woke up to a tv that was on, is it haunted?

Now to figure out food and coffee.

Gym done. Decided to get a trainer again. I need some accountability around nutrition.

I eat well, but I think it could be better and someone to help me strengthen my shoulder to avoid migraines would be amazing.

[-] [email protected] 8 points 4 days ago

That would be amazing if you could work out the kinks with your shoulder so you didn’t get migraines from it again.

Day 3 of snot hell. Decided to do another RAT though I suspect it's just a cold. Thank the flying spaghetti Monster for nasal rinses and real Sudafed. Also warm water with a tsp of honey and a half tsp of ghee has helped with the coughing.

The black cat is outside… but I can’t feed him or encourage him to hang around otherwise I’ll have a cat fight on my hands

[-] [email protected] 5 points 4 days ago

Not a good idea to feed neighbourhood cats anyway unless you know them. You don't know if they have a special diet or not.

Went to bed pretty early (for me), but couldn't sleep. Got up at 2am and had an oven apple pie and promptly fell asleep on the couch with the cat.

Woke up wide awake at 6am. Wtf.
