Vent your rage and or employment woes. I am having a bad time looking for a job as an employed keyboard-jockie. Hate my current job can’t find another.

The employment process sucks, the ghosting sucks, the endless automations and inhuman interactions just to find a job. The quantification of every part of the job process is bonkers. Reading all of this fluffy nondescript job profiles is a job in and of itself

The meta-game of having to “optimize” your resume to be read by an A.I. or to having to use an A.I. for the application itself just sucks. All this work for an entry to middle level job that barely covers your bills is just soul draining.

All these employers want you to have 2-5 years experience and a masters degree for a starter position. It’s all just terrible.

It feels like “finding a job” is a skill in and of itself in a way it should not be. “Job hunting” is also a deeply solo thing, even using your professional and/or social network pits you against the “The Market”. It sucks so much.

“The Market” is so bad at everything. We could all more easily organize work and finding work if we all weren’t alienated independent nodes all forced into battle. Yet another reason planning and democratic processes are better than this weird tyranny of “the free market”.

Jump in this thread and be mad with me. Big mad.

Fuckin right there with you. Over 150 applications so far and only one interview request

That's the story lol. You apply 100 times and get one response

Convinced that part of the reason most ND folk have trouble holding down a job is because we can’t put up with the bullshit charade/song and dance that goes into finding a job and keeping a job

It’s literally all a performance and I’m forced everyday with interacting with people pretending it’s not. None of the work goes into bettering the common man and saying a 9-5 is “contributing to society” is a deeply gross lie

it's evil and awful. i did a significant career change at age 30 and nobody took 7 years of high school teacher experience seriously or transferrable to office work. mf, i'm my own project manager AND support staff, plus i provide live presentations 6 hours a day. replying to emails and paying a few invoices is literally the LEAST i could do. eventually i got something and i've been alright. try the public sector (school districts, local city/county govt, etc).

I’ve spent most of the last… since 2017 putting in applications. I’ve managed to land contracts but that’s about it, until the job I’m at now which is so soul sucking I’m just quitting. I can’t do it anymore.

I’ve put in literally thousands of applications, for basically anything I’m qualified for (I have a STEM degree), and gotten only a handful of interest from any of it. Almost all of that was poorly paid or just really shit jobs (or contracts - those I took, and that’s what I’m probably going back to because at least I don’t have to deal with the same petty and dumb assholes for years…)

It’s so disheartening that I just spent the last 6 months minimal living and squirreling away my paychecks so I can spend a decent chunk of time minimal living and looking for something good, rather than good enough. I expect I’ll need to take a BS job before I find that, though..

The best way is to know someone who already works there and have them put through your resume. I’ve never gotten a single interview from the algos.

Recruiters on LinkedIn can also be good leads for this.

I've gotten all my jobs via recruiters. They are very good at being incessantly annoying to the employer so you can get an answer and not be ghosted. Downside is you need to be in a field that has recruiters.

Was unemployed for 2 years after finishing college, basically gave up after the first several hundred applications/six months. Only ended up ever getting anything due to nepotism because my mom's friend got me hired at an office job which allowed me to eventually get a job in my field that I had applied for earlier and not gotten despite the office job providing no meaningful experience. I'd had part-time jobs all through high-school (and summers in college) so it's not like I had 0 work experience. Still pisses me off to this day.

The most annoying thing for me is the ones who keep me in the dark. Just send me an email saying "applications are still being processed, expect to hear back in x" "we selected another applicant" or even "we aren't gonna hire you lmao" would be better than that

I had a job application earlier this year, a position that would help me greatly and I desired a lot. I submitted my entry and they didn't answer back for like two months, when they did they gave me an interview that went well and a week after I was rejected because "Your CV isn't what we're looking for atm"

It felt so fucking bad

Sorry to hear that man. That fucking sucks.

I was recently in the same boat. The worst aspect was dealing with the private hiring agencies that infest southern Ontario like ticks. Just trying to get the name of the company you were applying to was like pulling teeth. There was one in particular that a recruiter was trying hard to get me to sign on to. She said it was a small-office job for a supplier to a car manufacturer, after I told her I was looking for a small-office many-hats job that had no corporate head office elsewhere. Turns out she was lying, the job would have been for fucking Toyota Tsusho.

I finally lucked out with a small business that was looking for someone with exactly my weird niche skillsets that are rare in combination. I am under no illusions that I was anything but very very very lucky with regards to timing.

There's an entire field of employment with the sole purpose of making people looking for a job do a bunch of performative bullshit and dance and sing on command. doomer

I usually spend years between jobs, being very rural, trans and poor doesn't help me, since name change outs me and mysteriously I get offers rejected at the last moment upon background check. Right now I'm doing hell retail at the only LGBTQIA friendly local retailer and one of those rater jobs and am clocking in and much over 50 hrs a week, though making far under 15k a year. Like 1 day of the rater job pays more than a week at the hell retail job (they always make me close too), but my aunt and sister say it looks nicer on my resume than the nebulous rater job that 'no one understands what you're doing'. I'm also getting to the point where ageism is a factor and I'm past too old for gradschool in my major, at least in the US.
