We need an alternative to android auto nown๐Ÿ˜ญ

[โ€“] [email protected] 10 points 12 hours ago

Could they just try to make it so it actually works rather than telling me my wife doesn't exist in my contacts list when I ask it to call her?

"Smart AI" is like saying "Microsoft Works"...

It's a more talkative, more delusional Clippy.

I do not normally say this, but please, for the love of fuck, make Gemini a premium feature

the monkey's paw curls

There will now be constant popups for you to upgrade and regular "free trials" that shift around the ui so you use it accidentally, and then go back to normal a week later.

There is a simple solution: stop using Android Auto.

Nothing. Perhaps wean yourselves away from it.

[โ€“] [email protected] 1 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

So replace it with nothing. Down grade my experience. That's your solution?

Use the radio which is full of ads and don't use Google maps on my dashboard?

People have been navigating with physical maps a lot longer than smart phones.

Or use Open Street Map

[โ€“] [email protected] 1 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 2 minutes ago)

Right and it was a pile of shit.

Google maps is a million times better, that's why most of the people use it, over a physical map.

[โ€“] [email protected] 2 points 6 hours ago

I use Android Auto with open street maps

How is it a downgrade to disable a torrent of shit you don't want?

Drop some small change on a mobile-data-enabled tablet if you want Google Maps. Even better, use one of the many GPS apps based on Open Streetmap, or even Here We Go. Some of those have an excellent disconnected (from mobile data, not GPS) operating mode and route-finding that's no worse than Google's.

[โ€“] [email protected] 2 points 1 hour ago

How is it a torrent of shit that I don't want exactly?

It gives all I need, music, maps, Google assistant. In no way it's out an issue.

You're just a malcontent looking for issues, with a chip on his shoulder.

I might try some other software, but android auto is dependable and pretty good.

What the hell are you talking about?

[โ€“] [email protected] 3 points 14 hours ago

How about instead you make it where I'm can constantly connect the first time!

It's insane to me that there are basically no good options for a secure and private phone from a major manufacturer. All commercial options have some caveats, even Apple. It seems like Google Pixel + Graphene is the only option but you have to do that yourself and it still ONLY supports Google Pixel (for technical reasons, I understand). Literally any laptop can be made secure and private by installing Linux, but with phones your options are severely limited by hardware

[โ€“] [email protected] 0 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

We do have this. Not perfect but a good effort by them. https://www.braxtech.net/

[โ€“] [email protected] 1 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Pre-order. So it's not on the market yet.

[โ€“] [email protected] 1 points 3 hours ago

Correct. They are shipping it in batches. The first one already shipped I think.

It runs iode OS. A forked project of lineage. It's also capable of running Ubuntu touch. It's a great project, just has some deal breakers for me. If I ever de-google I'd rather use an existing device.

[โ€“] [email protected] 1 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

What are your deal breakers?

[โ€“] [email protected] 1 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

At least for me.

1612 x 720P screen, not terrible but not great. Would be a downgraded from current device

5000Mah battery, nice; 10W charging, err; 2.5 - 3 hour charge time, yikes.

Mediatek 6300 octa core processor, not actually terrible, but performs less than my current device.

8GB RAM, again not horrible, same as my current but it could be a tad higher. Can't complain too much about this one though.

Overall not a bad device. For someone who doesn't use their phone heavily and like the idea of a dedicated privacy friendly phone, it may do well.

Also for its price point. It is only fair that it wouldn't be the top performing device of course.

[โ€“] [email protected] 20 points 1 day ago (2 children)

They couldn't possibly make it any more garbage than it actually is.

In the middle of an audio book in any media player but you connect to your car? Too bad! Android Auto is its own separate little world and your playlist position is different in the car vs. out of it.

Someone sent you a text but ye gods forbid, they sent it before you started driving your car? Too bad! You can't see past text messages, just the ones that were sent while you were driving. I guess if somebody texted you an address in advance you'll have to fish your phone out of your pocket.

Somebody's calling you who is already in your address book. Too bad! We'll only show the phone number on the screen and not their contact name.

Etc., etc.

Android Auto is basically useless. My car stereo supports both, so I just screen mirror if I actually care about functionality. I only use Android Auto itself when all I want is a map.

[โ€“] [email protected] 1 points 3 hours ago

The position thing is the fault of the app developer. I don't have that issue with Podcast Republic.

[โ€“] [email protected] 9 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago) (1 children)

My favorite thing to hate on Android auto is: if you get a call or text while using google maps for directions, the notification blocks your view of your directions. I drive with the voice dictation off, i hate driving with 'turn left, turn right, turn left...' Announcing every 2 minutes while I'm in the car so I glance at the screen before I need to make turns. In this case, if someone messages or calls you before an exit number or turn on google maps, you will miss it, I've passed many highway exits because of this.

All 3 of these things are Google's own products, how the fuck couldn't they have thought this through? It also gives the impression, they do literally no real world testing.

[โ€“] [email protected] 1 points 15 hours ago

That's also happened to me many times lol! But honestly this is my only real gripe with Android Auto. I hope Gemini doesn't make it worse

[โ€“] [email protected] 4 points 19 hours ago

Good thing I don't use android auto either then I guess.

[โ€“] [email protected] 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Smarter eh? My BP already usually up when driving in traffic. You sure this isn't just going to piss me off more because I feel like this is just going to piss me off more?

[โ€“] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago

I know people depend on auto implementation a lot and even I have hard time breaking away from Maps. But we are frogs and this water is getting hot.

Only proper solution is to deny the parasite engagement. We do it now or later. The more we wait, the harder it will be.

[โ€“] [email protected] 15 points 1 day ago

~~smarter~~ worse

FTFY

This is why I didn't buy a wireless android auto adapter when I bought a different car. I figured Gemini was going to get stuffed down our throats there.
