Zambia is a country of 20 million people, located in southern Africa. Breaking free from British rule in the 1960s, the new government was a one party state ruled by the socialist UNIP party with its leader Kenneth Kaunda, who was a strong supporter of the Non-Aligned Movement (and was its chairman from 1970-73). Its economy has been and remains characterised by copper exports - it is the second-largest copper exporter in Africa - and the economy deeply struggled in the 1970s due to the price of copper plunging. After the fall of the USSR, and due to violent protests, Kaunda stepped down and instituted a multiparty democracy, which has been maintained without (successful) coups to this day, though there are warnings by the leader that some are plotting a coup, given the trend right now.^AA^

Earlier this year, in June, Zambia struck a deal to restructure the $6.3 billion in debt that they are burdened with, of which China is the single largest creditor.^Reuters^ Though he has typically been more West-friendly, last week, President Hichilema traveled to China for two days, meeting with various companies, and Xi Jinping himself. They elevated their relationship to that of a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.^Xinhua^ He and Xi have agreed to the increased use of local currencies in trade.^BB^

Hichilema said Zambia thanks China for supporting the African Union's entry into the G20 and China's positive role in resolving the Zambian debt issue. The Zambian side abides by the one-China principle, highly appreciates the guiding philosophy and principles of Chinese modernization, and hopes to learn from China's development experience.

Hichilema has also said:^AN^

"We can do more, faster, because the needs are tremendous in Zambia. I heard some of the solutions are here. All we need to do is to combine the two together."

Resources For Understanding The War

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.

Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.

Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.

Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Telegram Channels

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

Pro-Russian

https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR's former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR's forces. Russian language.

https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.

https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.

https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.

https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.

https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.

https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.

https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine

Almost every Western media outlet.

https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.

https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.

Simon Watkins - an oil industry analyst ghoul who nonetheless has very good contacts and information - talks about the current state of oil prices, and says (unsurprisingly) that Saudi Arabia and Russia benefit from forcing oil prices higher and higher, and that Saudi Arabia is paying more attention to what China wants than what America wants. He suggests that the equilibrium price for Brent is about $85, with a ceiling of $95 (prices currently sit at $93). Back in the Trump years, the ceiling was $15-20 lower. Interesting critiques of Watkins' position in the comments for those more interested.^NC^

Meanwhile, uranium prices continue to approach highs not seen for over a decade. We've gone from "the Niger coup is really significant for uranium prices" to "actually, it's not really that significant for uranium prices" to "actually, it might be somewhat significant for uranium prices because the output of other uranium producers are already booked". However, Tunisia’s President Kais Saied has become increasingly authoritarian since suspending parliament, sacking the government and governing by decree in July 2021. A new constitution was introduced this year and many high-profile opposition leaders and civil society activists have been arrested and charged with sedition in recent months.

U.S. homebuilder sentiment turns negative for first time in five months

U.S. homebuilder confidence dropped below the key break-even measure of 50 for the first time in five months amid high mortgage rates, according to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB)/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI) released Monday.

Builder confidence in the market for newly built single-family homes in September fell five points to 45, as persistently high mortgage rates above 7 percent continue to erode builder confidence, the association said in a statement. The decrease follows a 6-point drop in August.

The average rate on the 30-year fixed mortgage has been over 7 percent since June, due to the U.S. Federal Reserve's aggressive rate hikes since March last year. The target range for the federal funds rate is at 5.25 percent to 5.5 percent, the highest level in over two decades.

"High mortgage rates are clearly taking a toll on builder confidence and consumer demand, as a growing number of buyers are electing to defer a home purchase until long-term rates move lower," said NAHB Chief Economist Robert Dietz.

NAHB Chairman Alicia Huey, a custom home builder and developer from Birmingham, Alabama, noted that on the supply-side front, builders continue to grapple with shortages of construction workers, buildable lots and distribution transformers, which is "further adding to housing affordability woes."

I got a chill down my spine reading a headline about how the Swedish cops have developed some new ballistics forensics wonderweapon in the war against gangs, that can apparently analyse casings in a few hours.

But then the technology is like, a plastic cylinder? Like they just say its a brand new plastic container that you put the casing in and it doesnt damage DNA, what the fuck could the previous procedure have been that this is a world first development?

Congo Government Denies Rumors About Coup D’éTat

These rumors have occurred in a context of deteriorating political stability in Africa due to recent coups in Gabon, Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso.

The Minister of Communication of the Republic of the Congo, Thierry Moungalla, denied this Sunday the rumors that circulated on social networks about a coup d'état against the president of the country, Denis Sassou Nguesso, taking advantage of his trip to New York to attend the 78th session General Assembly of the United Nations.

Moungalla said responded on Sunday on his X account (formerly Twitter):"The government categorically denies the spread of false information. We wish to reassure the public of the prevailing tranquility and encourage everyone to carry on with their daily activities calmly."

The government's official website also published a statement reaffirming its rejection of any reports concerning an attempted coup.

Denis Nguesso ascended to the presidency of this oil-rich Central African nation through a military coup in 1979. Although he experienced a temporary setback in 1992 when he lost Congo's initial multi-party elections, he later reclaimed power in 1997 following a period of civil conflict.

These rumors have occurred in a context of deteriorating political stability in Africa due to recent coups in Gabon, Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso.

President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, calls on his counterpart from Guyana, Irfaan Ali, not to allow the US Southern Command to turn his country into a military base and thus encourage an escalation of conflict with Venezuela around the Essequibo.

I guess the US lost their chance by invading Venezuela using Brazil and/or Colombia.
