"The Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions (LO), the country’s largest labor federation, has voted in favor of a comprehensive boycott of #Israel, including a ban on trade and investment with #Israeli companies.

The decision was passed with an overwhelming 88 percent majority during LO’s national congress, held in the #Norwegian capital, Oslo, from May 8 to 9, the official #Palestinian news agency WAFA reported."

I mean, it’s wildly too late, but I guess it’s a good thing it happened eventually.

[–] [email protected] 50 points 6 days ago (3 children)

I think it's because the Israeli government blatantly said last week it'll take permanent control of parts of Gaza and push all Gaza Palestinians southward.

That hits all the points in the definition of genocide. (Intent, forcing a populous to move,...)

In contrast with the last 18 months, there is no more doubt if it's a campaign against Hamas/freeing the prisoners or actual genocide, they have now delivered proof.

It's crazy how much more the Western world cares about words than actions. The only reason they start doing something is because Israel is loudly announcing how evil they are every single day.

Agreed. This drives me absolutely insane where, here in the US, so many of our leaders who have actual power love taking credit for speeches and then doing absolutely nothing positive in a practical sense.

Germany is the ultimate example. They will directly take action against anything pro-Palestinian. A group waves a Palestinian flag and the Gestapo mashes in the skulls of all their members, brands them a terrorist group and tries to deport them.

But when it comes to the AfD which is actively doing Nazi salutes suddenly it's all about debating free speech and 'democracy'. And banning groups is suddenly scary and undemocratic.

The double standards and hypocrisy are getting beyond comical.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 6 days ago

Identical in the US, except the Nazi Party of America already won and is currently in power.

[–] [email protected] -3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

and the Gestapo mashes in

You're trivialising Nazi rule.

And that's precisely why noone in Germany is listening to you. I can only surmise that you're a Hasbara agent trying to paint the Palestinian cause in a bad light.

German police are disappearing and torturing protestors? Nay, they're not just doing all that Gestapo shit, they're even worse? Is that what you're trying to say? [citation needed], then.

Watch your comparisons if you want to be taken seriously.

OH yeah, his sternly worded letters. Just so impactful.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Actions may have other intentions behind them. Written statement are easier to prove in a court of law.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant nearly 6 months ago. They must have thought their actions were pretty clear evidence of their crimes.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 days ago

Norway may have different evidence requirements.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Indeed, they specifically called it genocide when it was announced. And they voted against their leadership who only wanted one of those "culture and academic" boycotts(a small part of the leadership also wanted to call it "unimaginable suffering" instead of genocide). But the people voted 240 in favor and 69 against an economic boycott. They're also backing up the UN's demand of the occupation ending by September. At which point they want Norway to initiate an international boycott if it has not happened.

They have some ties to the current major political party, the Labour Party, who's leader said he "disagreed".

For reference, this an "umbrella organization" with two dozen smaller unions totaling over a million people, out of Norways 5.5m total population. They represent around 35% of working adults, meaning that if they go into strike, the country shuts down.

EDIT: It should be mentioned that this was at a yearly conference, which is also why it didn't happened sooner.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 6 days ago (1 children)

It was always a land grab.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Oh, I agree, but knowing and proving are different ballparks, especially in an international court.

The discussions I had on reddit in 2023 about it was proof of intent, which is needed for acts to be labelled genocide. An official press statement stating that intent is proof. The ICC case has basically just been made.

It's no longer about a suspected landgrab, and if it wasn't for 18 months of Hasbara PR wearing us down, more countries would feel forced to act, as governments should now no longer be allowed to appeal to "benefit of doubt".

I just wanted to point that out that the press communication we all saw coming, is (in regards to calling them a genocidal state) not just a smoking gun, but a video of them pulling the trigger.

When the first Trump golf course goes in, we will know for sure!

What’s really interesting is how Apple Maps doesn’t have updated satellite images of Gaza, yet google maps shows a ton of damage.

It’s pretty nuts to see the before and after like that.

[–] [email protected] 21 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Yes and No. Gaza and the Westbank are already done for, but Israel has great ambitions. They intend to annex Lebanon and increasingly large parts of Syria and Jordan, so for those it is not yet too late.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 6 days ago (2 children)

I don’t see Jordan not defending its land.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

I don't see that resulting in anything other than Jordan being summarily declared a terrorist state by netanyahu and his supporters.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Isnt the West Bank technically still Jordan? I have no idea tbh.

But yeah they will have to defend it sooner or later if they dont want to suffer the same fate.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (2 children)

Nope UN Resolution 242. Jordan grabbed the area during Israel's war of independence (1948), annexed it in 1950, then Israel did its six-day thing, conquering the territory, and the UN said "nope neither of you can keep it it's still Palestine".

Much of applicable law in Palestine is Jordanian law, though: It's a modern system and culturally appropriate enough, so why replace it when you can tinker. Not that it matters much, Israel is applying its own martial law to the whole area because it didn't annex it but occupy it, which in principle should make the settlements illegal under Israeli law but you know only democracy in the Near East and all that.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Interesting framing to call the colonization and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians a "war of independence“

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Well, it should also have been Palestine's independence: The UN mandate was dissolved, terminating British rule, and then instead of having two brand-new states shit hit the fan even harder. Zionists wanted their state, surrounding Arab states wanted to have none of that, hence also why Jordan grabbed the West Bank.

I mean in all other cases we call the point where colonial mandates were removed "independence", it doesn't really matter that the state then established is also a colonising state. Random example: The USA.

Thanks for the recap. There are so many events in that areas timeline, its hard to keep track of.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 days ago (2 children)

I wonder how many countries they have to control before someone (in power) actually cares.

Good. Israel should be sanctioned by the entire civilised world.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago

Thats a good start. But they need to be brought to justice for their crimes against humanity.

Gotta say, are most governments just afraid of Israel?

Isnotreal is still killing people at the same rate as before and they all act like the war is 'over'? They are also still in Southern Lebanon.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago

Southern Lebanon? Surely you mean northern Israel. Just a buffer zone.

It's related to this meme: https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/slowpoke

Anyway, this trade union was faster than most of the world.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 0 points 4 days ago (1 children)

It actually doesn't make sense considering the context.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 4 days ago (1 children)

It makes perfect sense. Boycotting netanyahu's genocidal apartheid regime is more than a year overdue. Hence, slowpoke.

I mean, unless you don't think they should be boycotted for committing genocide.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Which other countries have done this?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 4 days ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 0 points 4 days ago

Because that's exactly the reason why the meme is misused here.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 days ago

Looks like the zionists forget to send checks to Norway. Or the norwegians were too decent a people to take them.
