To do list for Mark Carney:

  • Encourage all Government Agencies to switch to Linux. It's completely ridiculous that hundreds of millions of dollars of taxpayer money are wasted every year on Microsoft licenses. The French Gendarmerie switched to Linux and they never went back to Windows. They saved millions. Money that they can spend on actually doing their job.

  • Create a Canadian fund to encourage Open Source Software. A $10 million fund over 5 years would not be much money, but it could help open source software developers. A small $100 000 grant could really help Gimp, Kdenlive and Krita fight Adobe. Too many Canadian artists and Canadian production companies are exploited by Adobe.

  • Ban foreigners from owning more than 40% of any Canadian media outlet. It's absolutely sickening that an american hedge fund (Chatham Asset Management) currently owns 20 different canadian newspapers.

  • Reduce the immigration rate. Justin Trudeau did a lot of good things, but immigration was one of two biggest failures. Under his leadership, the population increased by 3% a year. The Canadian population increase twice as fast as the population of Mexico, Brazil, Spain, the United States, Turkey, Saudi Arabia. This is too extreme. Canada should aim for 2% population growth instead of 3%. Also, don't concentrate people in a single place. It's wrong to have a 4% population growth in Toronto and 0.5% elsewhere.

  • Improve the voting system. This was the second failure of Justin Trudeau. The First-Past-The-Post voting system is just flawed. It is basically designed to create two very powerful political parties, at the expense of pluralism. FPTP is the reason why the US is stuck with only two parties.

Lost me at “Justin Trudeau did a lot of good things”.

Also, don't concentrate people in a single place. It's wrong to have a 4% population growth in Toronto and 0.5% elsewhere.

Is there a mechanism for anchoring immigrants in a specific location? My understanding is that our charter right of freedom of movement means that if everyone wants to go to Toronto, we can't stop them once they're in the country.

Latest quarterly population data has growth back down to historic norms.

Reduce the immigration rate

It's the only way to keep the working-age population steady, sorry.

The problem is we're living longer, and that's your 3% increase. You could try culling the oldies but it may be a hard sell.

The above plus:

Hit American services with an import tax.
USA always push numbers on trade excluding services, because USA has a huge surplus on services.

Stop buying American weapons and planes.
Those are often excluded too in trade numbers, and again places where USA has huge trade surplus.

Then form a "country club", where Canada and other countries work together to prevent dependency on USA. I'm sure EU and other European countries would love to cooperate more with Canada.

'Economic destiny'
"This will be an incredibly exciting time as we take control of our economic destiny to create a new Canadian economy," Carney said.

To this end, he promised to abolish existing trade barriers between Canadian provinces by July 1 to expand the economy, and to strengthen trade with "reliable allies".

this will be an exciting time indeed; I'm eager to see how this develops and Canada's economy decouples from the USA's and flourishes in spite of it

I like the idea of decoupling from the US. I'm concerned by the idea of putting "economic growth" (which usually means growing the wealth of the wealthy) above everything else.

What we need is to grow our economy from the bottom up, but doing that involves making moves that work against the interests of the wealthy.

We need an ecological destiny, not an economic one. I'm glad Carney got elected as he is the best to negotiate with Trump but I fear it'll ultimately be more of the same old, same old.

I feel it's never going to happen so it's safe to fantasize about, but nationalizing all of the US assets in Canada and seeing Trump implode would be a fun tv show to watch

Consider attracting Americans who hate Trump and want to leave.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Why? If they want to be here, they can apply like everyone else. I don't want taxpayer funding going to some stupid advertising scheme to convince "the good ones" to come here.

Canada is only the size of California population wise. If you want to be able to defend Canada and grow the economy, you need more people.

Sure, and we have lots of immigrants already, including from the US. We take in around 300,000-500,000 immigrants every year. Why should Canada specifically do (and spend) more so that we can get more Americans to come here? I know Americans want that, but why should we do it? I don't see a benefit.

We're even passing legislation lately that makes it so that we take in fewer people. Why would we change that for Americans?
