She’s already wrapped S2 of Ted, and clearly she likes working with Seth, so since Lysella stayed on board in the end, wouldn’t it be awesome if she became a recurring character or even a cast member?

Unless she's working to onboard new species that have just reached the point where they can join the Planetary Union, I'm done with that character. One too many back and forth subplots. She never seemed to learn her lesson (as understandable as that was for someone in her position).

If she does return, it would be good to see her be like a Dr. Taylor from The Voyage Home, someone out of place in time (as it were) but putting her skills to use in the Union none-the-less.

Well, except Dr. Taylor was a marine biologist with a PhD, whereas Lysella was a barista/cashier. But my thoughts were that since we're already inevitably dealing with a bit of time lapse which it is likely they will integrate in the story where they pickup, it could be presented that she's been through the academy and is now a junior officer. She would integrate right into the setting in a perfectly plausible way.

I have the same thoughts, the fact that several Orville people made their way over to Ted is a good sign that they mutually enjoyed the work, which is encouraging in terms of returning to the Orville. The show will probably be hurting for cast members upon a return since everybody's contracts have presumably expired by now and at least some of them will have moved on to other projects. I think this puts Wigham/Lysella in a strong position to be added as main cast, whether that means directly or indirectly replacing other Orville crew members.

Back when season 3 was airing, there were also rumors of Seth MacFarlane wanting to move into a more behind-the-scenes role on the show in a possible season 4. If that was true in the first place, I wonder whether it has changed in the intervening period. I think preserving as much of the cast as they can still get would have been a priority, and if nothing else, they can certainly get Seth. Personally, I hope he does stay on. I've really enjoyed his character arc and think he's grown as a performer throughout the show.

I mean, in my personal view it’s not quite the show without Ed Mercer as captain. Same as TNG would have not been the same without Picard.

He doesn’t have to have every story require him involved heavily, but it would hurt the show too much for him to not be the captain anymore.

Lysella maybe could be said to have gone through academy training by now since it’s been a few years. That would be cool.

I’m pretty sure all of them really want to be back and continue it. It’s a question of schedules of course. As you said.

I am really excited about it no matter what.

Well the whole Anaya storyline was explicitly written to give Ed an exit, and they can't leave that one just "forgotten" they're probably gonna pick up that thread in S4.

I certainly hope they pick it up, but I don’t really see how they would expect the show to continue as successful as it is, with him no longer the captain. He’s the heart of the show.

...they've already confirmed S4 and they haven't written him out yet. wat

Oh I know it’s been confirmed. I meant pick it up as in when you said pick up that storyline where they left off. I imagine, though, that we are going to be entering the story several years after where they left off.

The Orville is quite precious, it deserves to come back and I’m absolutely thrilled it’s finally happening. We all got very crushed when we thought it was never going to happen. I’m extremely appreciative that all the people involved have such a fond experience and expectations that they’re eager to jump right back in.
