Honestly I am stoked for this. I am already writing out a Seven Havens fic just to get it out of my head, lol.

The whole premise of a shattered post-LoK world is so mineable, as is an actual White Lotus character, and I think my only bugaboo may be that Nisha and Pavi are allegedly very young (nine?). But I’m sure there will be an “old character” plot like Zuko/Iroh and Tenzin’s family.

…And I’m kinda disappointed how lukewarm the community reception is, especially on Reddit. It feels like I’m increasingly alienated from the fandom because I don’t worship the original over other entries.

The ages makes sense, it is still a kids show. Korra had too much romance and adult/teen drama for a typical kid.

I like the new angle, we've seen or read 5 stories about the "chosen one" who is celebrated basically everywhere they go. This new show sounds like it'll be like Anti-Avatar Day everywhere they go.

The only think I'm disappointed in, is its another stain on Korra's legacy for the community to shit on. The community calling her the "worst avatar" because she chose to break the avatar line has always been annoying. Can the world end after she died? or maybe she exploded which took out the world, I'd be okay with that.

Also Jinora had better be dead before the world ended or they better have a good explanation how she didn't pull some spirit bs to "deus ex machina" save the world again.

This has sarcasm tags, right? Or half sarcasm tags. Heh. There will absolutely be rants about that...

But yeah, people are going to obsess over lore mechanics and hate it. It reminds me of the part of the Star Wars fandom utterly obsessed with the trilogy, prioritizing lore details to where they can't even see the story/characters. Hence I have zero desire to participate in /r/thelastairbender.

I thought ATLA was a little too far in the opposite direction. Aang being 12, Katara being 14, was borderline too young for coming-of-age with no big timegaps, even though it fit Aang's 'airy' personality. Zuko/Iroh was just about perfect. Zuko was basically Korra's age, but was not in a mental place for much romance. NATLA supposedly having a bigger gap is, amusingly, more ideal.

I feel like Pavi/Nisha being 9 is even more extreme, unless they are really trying to "kid" it down (which seems unlikely).

Yeah this sounds really cool.

On second thought, maybe the darker setting with a very young Avatar (and an older guide) would work. That's a nice juxtaposition with her naivety.

I guess half sarcasm on the Jinora bit. It's like any show where they introduce an over powered ability and never use it again. Lightning bending in ATLA was terrifying, in LOK its just another rock to the face.

9 is definitely a young starting point. But you can definitely get a good story out of that age. Plus the states age doesn't have to align with our perception of how a kid that age would be; especially in ATLA we basically mentally aged everyone a few years; Azula was 14...

In LOK its just another rock to the face.

I contest this. We only really see Mako and a notorious mob boss do it (both top tier benders) Mako kills someone with it very quickly, and for all we know those factory workers are rare. Not even Korra does it. And I like the idea of it being used as a “utility” for zapping cars and stuff.

I went with that same idea in my fic, where there’s a “blacksmith” type lavabender who uses his bending for hilariously mundane purposes, not large feats like Ghazan.

I also have a headcanon of there being a long-refined and secretive “royal” form (like we see the royal family do, and was largely lost after ATLA) and “street” lightning forms like we see in LoK.

Yeah I am warming up to this. I like the idea of some poor kid in a darker setting, it gives the story some light.

That being said, this kinda annoyed me about ATLA too? Like it wasn’t a big deal, but how emotionally/physically mature those kids were was kinda odd. It served the purposes for the story (and it makes a lot of sense for Azula who had a screwed up upbringing), but it’s a bit of a “reality stretch.”

If they are nine, I hope they act properly immature, especially at first, while mentors do some heavy lifting. The fandom probably wants them to act ~fifteen like in ATLA, but I think that would be a tragedy.

My bad, I was thinking of the comic when

in "The Search"Zuko got hit point blank and walked away like it was just another rock to the face. (RIP Jet, the only one without clear plot armour)

As for the age/maturity of the show, we have to remember the odd spot the show's audience puts the creators in.

It's being made for children, marketed to adults, and going to be watched by a large number of very judgmental adults stuck in the past. It's not like a normal cartoon where the parents mostly ignore it, and its also not a cartoon made for adults like Arcane.

Exploring darker themes will have to tread lightly and have comedy/brighter bits mixed in at inopportune times (Melo...) to keep a kid enganged. I honestly don't think the network will let them get away with how dark the early ATLA episodes were (but I hope they do!).

ATLA did a great job of balancing the needs of children and adults, I hope they can pull it off again.

Ah I forgot about that. I don't remember the comics well.

I do have faith in this, lol.

Technically, ATLA and LoK were both kids shows! I bet they can absolutely keep it light with Pavi being so young, having a child's wonderous perspective, with implied dark stuff going on all around her. Honestly I think its an even better setup than ATLA, as the Avatar supposedly has an older mentor now (Jae) instead of the "adult crew" being a sideshow like Zuko or Tenzin. They can be the exclusive focus instead.

I have faith it'll work out too, but also curbing my own expectations...we're not going to get a super dark and gritty show like Arcane but I do expect more than the mindless slop many children's cartoons have become.

That's fine. The balance is part of the charm.

I think fans forget how 'immature' ATLA is on the surface, too. Like, its a lot of silly kid jokes with cartoon sound effects to go with it. Darker implications often don't hit unless you squint and already know the lore. Seven Havens could totally hit that same tone and make leadership feel that they got a kids show.

EDIT: But yeah, I am keeping my expectations... open.
