Building houses that are properly insulated would help far more since people wouldn't have to use heating and cooling as often, yet that doesn't seem to be a thing that builders are actually doing. I'm an Aussie living in California in a house built in the 1960s, and it's better insulated than an Aussie house built in the 2010s.

In any case, updating food packaging to include an environmental score isn't a bad idea. Hopefully it'd work out better than the health score, which is still entirely voluntary and doesn't always make sense.

Eating less meat et al is something we can personally do. The very wealthy have massive carbon footprints, mainly due to their ability to consume resources. It's like I still pick up my dog's shit at the park even though not everyone does. Giving up because not everyone is trying to care for the environment is definitely not the solution.

Collective action on a wide scale far outpaces what Elon could do, and it's not as though he would increase his personal consumption to counteract what thousands of others do.

We need to keep in mind the overall picture, and not let other people continuing harmful practices to stop us from trying to reduce ours. Otherwise nothing would ever get better.

"I'm not going to drive less or use a bicycle because the rich use jets."

"I'm not going to install balcony solar because the rich waste energy with factories and mansions."

"I'm not going to consume less because the rich consume more than me."

These mindsets stifle positive change that can genuinely make a difference, especially when we are so short on time.

Also, there are now extremely good plant based red meat alternatives like Quorn, Impossible, or on a budget, Seitan. All of which allow us to continue to use our favorite meat based recipes without contributing to climate change (and lower bowel cancer risks :D), letting us give elon the finger without sacrificing anything.

Just putting an opinion out there, I don’t know how widely liked it is. Quorn was not a good alternative (I say this purely based on personal taste).

Started eating it in 2010, but haven’t touched it since 2019 with all the other alternatives that you can easily get now.

Coles branded seitan was really our favourite but they discontinued it.

Anyway, the amount of stuff I always had to add to Quorn to make it taste alright… what a time.

But yeah, I’m a meat eating guy and my partner is vegetarian, but for a while now I’ve been mixing it up with fake meats to try and eat less red meat.

I've had a similar experience with other alternatives like Soy curls, which I got to taste good a couple times but strangely could never replicate, and ended up just tasting like adding cereal to me. And Beyond beef, which has an off flavor from the pea protein base.

Quorn seemed to have no off flavor to me or my family, it seemed totally neutral, and they couldn't tell the difference in tacos, chili, stuffed peppers, etc. I was surprised it wasn't more popular based on how long its been around.

Maybe there's a genetic component that's influencing our flavor perception of it? like how saccharine can taste terrible to people due to genetic differences, limiting its use in soda or candy.

In the end, Tacos was the only thing I liked using Quorn for, I think because even with beef mince tacos I would spice it with so much cumin and paprika.

But it was really good for tacos.

When I used it for bolognese, just awful.

Yes. It sucks that the onus is further being put on individuals. While companies and wealthy people that consume energy or pollute on a massive scale don’t seem to face the same restrictions

(As someone who already drinks non-dairy and can’t eat meat.)

It's no secret that meat/dairy has a huge carbon footprint, the concept of reducing your animal produce intake for the benefit of the environment is pretty well established. We should be looking to reduce our impact as individuals as well as a species where we can, via both immediate options for purchasing choices as well as quality research in to better ways to do so.
