I made one the other day, though I bought the music from HDTracks instead of "acquiring" it from Limewire or Kazaa. Burned it to a CD because the bus I drive has a CD player but no SD card slot or anything.
Torrent scene is still alive and well. Actually has been revived pretty heavily since streaming services have gone to shit. MP3s are easy enough to just rip from youtube using yt-dlp. Supports more than just yt despite the name. That has all the info about it but you probably want to update to the nightly versions since they are more likely to be up to date.
God, the first music files I downloaded were MIDI and Soundtracker .MOD files using a 14,400k modem & BBS. That was after upgrading from my PC/XT to a 486/SX 25...those were the days.
I bought a printer yesterday and it has a dedicated slot to print on CDs, you've inspired me.

I remember lightscribe and thinking it was going to replace my need for sharpies but it was just a gimmick and while cool not very useful given the cost of disks

I am not old enough that I was doing this myself but I am old enough that I remember my dad doing it both for himself as well as for me so I could load music onto my mp3 player. My dad had a huge shelf of CDs. Some bought and some burnt
