I consider myself fairly left of center and I think we should do something about gun violence, but this is not the way to solve it.

  • Pretty much every university campus has a 3D printer that can be freely used
  • You can just ask your friend to get it for you
  • You can go out of state and back
  • Well, you can even make your own 3D printer, kids in high schools do it as a STEM project lol

One thing the legislators need to understand is that school shootings are crimes of obsession. A person is so obsessive and delusional about the issue that he's willing to go into excessive lengths to “make things right”. He'll find a way to get ahold of a 3D printer.

If we're talking about gangs though (most shooters don't have prior felonies to background check on), then they'll make the thing about money/scale and just get their plastic guns in other states/over the Internet.

Either way, the bill does more harm than good.

I'm going to take a wild guess and say this bill doesn't do the same for CNC machines despite those being literally how you make actual guns. Fucking NY liberals.

Don't take my mill from me! :'(

A Shapeoko is only a few hundred dollars more than a Bambu X1C and it makes functional weapons that don't jam. This does nothing to prevent people making guns in garages.

Shapeoko

I can't believe you've gone and mentioned something cool and expensive for me to hyperfixate on as a new hobby.

Never even heard of that now I'm going to look it up and never be able to afford one but want it anyway 🥰

That router ain’t cutting steel for those of you thinking it might. But if a gun can be 3d printed it can be routed from plastic too. I wouldn’t wanna shoot any gun made of plastic anyway though

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago

You use gun parts for the actual shooty bits, the plastic is everything else (which is usually plastic these days anyway)

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago

I've cut steel on a shaepoko before, it's just a tad bit slow.

Gun control policies being made by people who have never shot a gun, classic liberalism

Many consumer 3D printers, especially well-known ones like RepRap's, or Prusa or Voron, are open-source designs made to be assembled from general-purpose pieces. Many people already make them in this way. Whoever came up with this didn't do a basic background check on the tech...

The whole thing is fear mongering. The libs genuinely believe you can make a fully automatic AK-47 in .50 caliber ("Just upscale the barrel lol") out of resin.

[–] [email protected] 22 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

If you are determined enough, you can make anything. You absolutely can't just download a file and print an AK-47, but anybody who is disgruntled enough can find a way to kill someone.

The law was likely requested by a billionaire. Practicality doesn't matter as much when it's a direct request

[–] [email protected] 33 points 2 days ago (2 children)

So background checks for all 3d printers in practice.

[–] [email protected] 29 points 2 days ago

China is going to be sending a colony ship to Alpha Centauri while the United States outlaws screwdrivers and books which teach you how to make screwdrivers.

[–] [email protected] 21 points 2 days ago

It's just like the California micro-stamp laws, where technically the technology exists, but in practice it just restricts everything.

NY introduces bill to require background checks for any materials capable of creating the-doohickey

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago

Doos and hickeys al Walgreens behind locm and key

We only pulled an Abe once and they’re still so scared by Fallout-like weapons. the-doohickey

[–] [email protected] 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Every time I see mentions of Abe I think of another Abe because the parallels are striking. No pun intended.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 days ago

Well, then... here take this, if you need one too, comrade. ak47

[–] [email protected] 23 points 2 days ago

drone-dropping lead weights still legal, acme contraptions stay winning

I wonder if this works in reverse? If banned from owning firearms = banned from owning 3d printers,
then having a 3d printer should be an automatic firearm license, yes? of course not because logic don't government

"Firearms" specifically, huh? Guess zipguns are fine lol

[–] [email protected] 14 points 2 days ago

Fine, I'll just 3D print swords then.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago

You can print drones, does that make people with cheap printers capable of warfare? Lmao Amerikkka is cooked
