Howdy! This is a comm for new and old users alike to introduce themselves and what their hobbies/interests are. This is also a good place to ask questions on anything you'd like to know more about, and generally to get acquainted with Hexbear and its users.

Rule #1: DON'T DOX YOURSELF - Don't post/comment any personal identifying information. Obviously it's ok to talk about yourself, but make sure there is no information that could potentially lead to doxxing yourself.

Rule #2: BE NICE - Assume everyone making a post here is doing so in good faith. Keep in mind that people introducing themselves may have limited knowledge of site history, in-jokes, etc. Also keep in mind that new people might not have the same understanding of leftist theory and/or knowledge of global politics that you do. We were all there once, so it's not a bad thing to be reasonably understanding and patient with new folks. Likewise, for those who are introducing yourselves, please have an open mind, be willing to interact and make friends, and don't come here with the intent to start fights.

Rule #3: DON'T BE A JERK - Any sort of transphobia, racism, homophobia, ableism, or other forms of bigotry will lead to an immediate ban. Similarly, harassment, being a creep, "chaser" behavior, or anything else done to make others feel uncomfortable will be dealt with harshly. Also try to keep any fediverse drama to a minimum. It's assumed new users are posting here to make friends and not to wade into any previous or existing conflict between instances, so please be respectful of that.

Rule #4: TRY TO BE HELPFUL - It's encouraged to help newcomers wherever possible, including explaining various aspects of this community, providing helpful resources, sharing similar interests you may have, and suggesting comms that they may be interested in.

Rule #5: USE CONTENT WARNINGS - For anything that might be considered a sensitive topic, please use the spoiler format along with a content warning to give people a heads up on what is being discussed.

If anyone has any feedback or any suggestions for improvement to this comm, don't hesitate to reach out to the mods here. Thanks!

Doing an #introduction post! 👋

A friend on Bluesky recommended this place; they really missed the easiest layup ever. I'm probably going to lurk here to figure out how best to interact with it, but it seems fun so far.

I'm a writer and artist. Unapologetically bi in a committed throuple. Mostly into fiction, music, and retro games.

I'm a veteran, but nothing has convinced me that the root cause of many of America's problems are white supremacy than having to work with senior military officers.

I wrote two complete (and one in-progress) sprite comics all set in the same universe that are story-driven, epic fantasies rather than comedy-driven stories.

If you enjoy the SNES RPGs from the Golden Age of Square Enix, then I think you will like my stories. (www.fortunasaga.com)

You might enjoy talking with tactical_trans_karen. She's also a veteran and has absolutely nothing good to say about the military.

Welcome! for some reason the link to your comic site's attaching itself to the hexbear site's link so I'll just post it straight up in my comment.

Markdown links []() must contain https:// otherwise lemmys parser assumes its a post id and prepends the site url

oh thank you Edie, I didn't know that. @[email protected] if you edit your post and throw in an https:// it should fix your link

Welcome! Any stories regarding military officers that cemented things or just the gradual realization that these are some sick freaks? Military brass Pov is a uniquely perverse one that's always worth hearing more about.

I'll share two things without doxxing myself too much (this is a pen name):

An IG told me I was an "asshole threatening national security" for being a whistleblower for the Fat Leonard scandal. Look it up, I'm one of the whistleblowers referenced in the "Discounting whistleblower warnings" in the Wikipedia article

For something specific other than the simmering Christian nationalism in the higher ranks was a case I investigated where two people who sexually assaulted someone had the whole thing swept under the rug by the commanders because they held operationally critical certifications.

It's not a moral institution. There are moral people in it , but the leadership rewards and selects a certain type of sociopath

We have a don't doxx yourself kinda culture here, so nom de plum is expected. It's not a rule per se, but keeping things in general mostly anon is just safest for everyone.

And also getting directly called a threat to national security by an officer is fucking bad ass! waow-based

Hello and welcome to Hexbear! kirby-wave If you have any questions about anything here, don’t hesitate to say them!

I wrote two complete (and one in-progress) sprite comics all set in the same universe that are story-driven, epic fantasies rather than comedy-driven stories.

This is amazing!!! I played a ton of SNES rpgs back in the day so I very much like this style. FFVI and Chrono Trigger were my faves but I did also play Breath of Fire 1 and 2 and some other stuff like that. I’ll read from the beginning when I get the chance.

I'm a veteran

I usually don’t talk about it much because it’s kinda just personally embarrassing for me, but same. Just curious, are you familiar with Mike Prysner at all? He was doing a really great podcast called Eyes Left that’s worth checking out, even though there hasn’t been a new episode in a bit.

Anyways, I’m glad you made it here and I hope you enjoy the site as much as I do! Care-Comrade

Hi. I hope you enjoy it.

The early comics were rough, but it's a lot of fun to work with even though I have developed a lot as an artist under my real name. Chrono and FF6 were the best, but the opening scene from Bof2 still gives me chills for how effective it is with one sprite, some good music, and some text.

Unfortunately, I don't know much about Mike other than I've heard his name in a few socialist discussions. I don't think it's embarrassing to be a veteran. I'm definitely not an oorahing, flag waving knucklehead. It's the only time that I've had socialized medicine and other benefits. I want those for everyone now :)

That’s with the eye and creepy music, right? It’s been a loooooooong time since I’ve played that but that’s what I remember. I could be mixing it up with the first one though.

Unfortunately, I don't know much about Mike other than I've heard his name in a few socialist discussions.

He’s fantastic and I highly recommend his stuff. In addition to the podcast, he’s also worked on The Empire Files with his wife Abby Martin and those documentaries are really really fantastic too.

I don't think it's embarrassing to be a veteran.

Eh. I’m grateful I managed to make it out with my limbs, sanity, and conscience intact, but I still consider it the biggest life mistake I’ve ever made, and I try to talk people out of joining every chance I get. That’s just me tho.

No, you're right. BOF2 is the one with the eye ball. Just excellent less-is-more design philosophy.

meow-bounce welcome

Sorry. Is John really your name? Is that really your photo? I'm worried about opspec.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

I can change my photo, but it's a pen name. I've been using this profile for 20+ years but I'll follow suit with the instances best practices. Thanks.

To be fair, I don't think it's a hard and fast rule. It's just good to be safe, as a lot of assholes and the feds would love to destroy your career or worse.
