MODERATORS

Hello users of Hexbear, we wanted to inform you that we are going to be locking the_dunk_tank and dredge_tank communities. We have created two new communities /c/gossip and /c/counterpropaganda to serve a similar but clearly distinct purpose than the dunk/dredge tanks.

Not only is the dunk tank a term that has racist origins, but also many posts there were almost no effort and often times requiring later edits to show how they weren't reactionary, ~~not useful with regard to developing rhetoric and furthering dialectical analysis of that which we dunk upon~~.

To that end, we wish posts of reactionaries to be placed in [email protected] along with an accompanying explanation (as simple or complex as desired) with the intent of countering the reactionary propaganda in the post body, as of now comments are not subject to the same ~~rhetorical rigor~~ rule.

For the posts ~~that are not "low-hanging fruit'~~ of notable people we ask that you use [email protected] .

These changes are mainly part of a continued effort to remove the racist and misogynistic elements from our community and grow.

Any moderators of the dunk tank or dredge tank that want to be a mod in the new communities let me know.

Any users with questions or comments please use this post, this change was made at the behest of the entire Hexbear mod and admin team. We will be looking for more moderators in an organized volunteer drive shortly, if you wish to submit an application you may send it to me via hexbear or matrix direct messages.

Use this post as a place for discussion to these changes. We will keep things as they are for 2 weeks and then reflect on the feedback, including this post: https://hexbear.net/post/3858346

As a personal addendum I am sorry if ~~the closing of the tanks~~ these changes removes a beloved space on the site and if you want to suggest a community to replace them you may do so at [email protected] or submit a mod application to take a more active role in shaping the site.

Sitewide or community changes come from proposals put forth from the mod team, discussed, and voted on by the mod team.

Any users wanting to suggest a community to replace the tanks, may do so at [email protected] current discussion is here https://hexbear.net/post/3858346 or submit a mod application to take a more active role in shaping the site.

You may also consider using [email protected] as a substitute for dunk/dredge tank posts as well

The mod statement can be found here: https://hexbear.net/comment/5613033

ApplicationWhat is your Hexbear username? Do you have any preferred pronouns? What are your thoughts on capitalism? What are your thoughts on imperialism? What are your thoughts on trans rights? What are your thoughts on racial justice? What do think about current and previous protests around the world? What are your thoughts on Veganism and Animal Liberation? Do you have any experience with other leftist online communities? What did those experiences teach you? What is your approach to moderation, and how do you work with teams? How do you deal with online drama and people who try to start things for the sake of it? What current comms would you be interested in moderating? Do you have any ideas for community engagement? Site works fine for a year

It's time to set this place on fire to keep them on their toes

strangelove

And simultaneously with this crusade against white cishet mindset, you delete poverty finance. chefs-kiss

Really do be feeling that downwardly-mobile professional class tbh

Rename the dunk tank, fine, good. This generally sucks though. The separation of dunk/dredge felt bad as it was, why even bother calling it c/gossip when it's just going to be c/shit_musk_says

I think the real site culture change we need is to stop the admins cosying up with libs.

If any of the instances were upset at things in the dunk tank, it's probably because they are NOT our allies. Why appease them?

Hexbear is only federated with communities we're compatible with. We're in a cosy spot. Users are generally comfy, kind, happy. Hexbear is a nice bubble of sanity and occasionally an excellent effort post grows out of that.

This is not the vanguard party. This is a commie bar / working mans club. We don't need more serious leftists spaces. We need more cosy leftist spaces.

Nobody here has a problem with getting rid of the name "dunk tank" now that we know where it came from. However, having a place to dredge/dunk on shitty reactionary opinions is fun and cathartic.

This change seems to be a continuation of the mod initiative which started with dunk tank rule 8, and which seems to be at odds with the way a large portion of the site's users use the site.

[–] [email protected] 53 points 1 month ago (5 children)

I think it would go a long way for all the people involved making these decisions to post an actual cogent reason for the moderation. Rule 8 wasn't exactly clear why it needed to be there. We defined the problem, that people were posting literal whos, but we never heard why that is a problem. I see some small attempts at trying to say it hurts the site in some way, but nobody can describe the harm.

Controversy over Rule 8 turns into a new comm. But now people are mad that the new comm is popular and again, it's somehow harming the site or leftism or rhetoric.

There only needs to be one comm for this. It's all the same thing. Mocking Rob Reiner for posting cringe isn't accomplishing more than mocking pepehitler42069 on reddit. Again, it's like there is someone with an idea of how all this matters and is important and needs to be changed but can't articulate why.

Here are my guesses:

  1. Someone wants the comm to be a compilation of the day's hottest takes but is thwarted by images of pepehitler88 on reddit being cringe. They want to use the comm as twitter news, to see what all the big dogs and they don't care about the little stuff.
  2. Someone thinks that critiquing twitter posts is some kind of agitprop and not critiquing power (aka people with follower) is ruining praxis. The election of burger king exacerbated this as high-level users saw it as an opportunity to agitate.
  3. Someone hates twitter posts, they hate any post that isn't super serious leftist literature except for community in-jokes and power users posting pee-pee poo-poo
  4. There's not much else going on so mods are trying to solve a problem that doesn't need solving. We're just keeping busy, trying to find some grievance to salve for our users.

But low effort shitposts and memes were what originally kept me browsing r/cth in the first place

Sometimes you just need to gawk at and vent about all the awful sickos and freaks out there with like-minded individuals

spoilerI'm also too stupid to effort post

Agreeing with the idea to call it something like the_hog_pen.

Either way, I understand the admins opinion, but I think they should pay attention to community opinions. The space is valued even if not by everyone.

Today I learned that dunking has cishet white man vibes or something? I try to fucking touch-grass and this shit happens.

[–] [email protected] 52 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Good call on getting rid of the name, its amazing how so many american expressions are deeply-rooted in their racism, lmao

HOWEVER

i'm going to throw my hat in the ring, even if its possible that my words are going to fall on deaf ears.

It should've just been the name change, there really is or was no major need to close down the dredge-tank and the d*nk-tank just to replace it with worse versions where you either exclusively post elon musk moments, notable people's horrible takes (how do you even measure how notable someone has to be before posting? please provide me more info or a handy sheet so i know when to post) or have to place down paragraphs and go down diatribes about how bad it is to murder children, just to be able to point and laugh at the most deranged takes and opinions that i'm sure, most of us, are surrounded by.

to me, the Dredge tank and other ''low-effort'' content that the moderator team seems keenly interested in reducing is some of the only forms of online interactions that provide me genuine catharsis! i know ten other people have also said the very same thing in this here thread, but its genuinely true for some of us; where i live, i'm surrounded by crazy evangelicals, racists and reactionaries. just all around disgusting and insane people, every single fucking day of my life, and that in turn, makes * me * go insane.

It makes me go mad with rage, but having a place where me and other like-minded people can just... have a laugh at this stuff is a massive relief, knowing that im not alone, that i'm not crazy, that these things aren't normal and most importantly, that they aren't good in any way—it's almost life-affirming, even.

just my two cents, but who the fuck knows, i'm just some dude.

now ive said this before, im not the biggest fan of the dunk tank, half of my dunk tank comments are usually just saying the dunk tank is shit via astronaut always has been emotes within dunk tank posts, and i've reported a post on the dunk tank for straight up unadulterated hardcore ableism before, but the way this has been handled is deffo a catgirl-disgust moment, projecting vague criticisms of a comm that by its very nature needs to be more tightly moderated than other comms as cishet and white and then deleting it without community feedback is pretty unserious and kinda sucks to hear for the people who regularly contributed and weren't white or cishet, and will do nothing but bring those types of posts to other comms, whereas before i could just block the dunk tank and move on with my week if i wasn't feeling it that particular day

so as an on and off semi-hater of the dunk tank, just give it a new less racist name and bring it back idk, sometimes even the disabled gays like me want to put a funny disgust emoji on a random twitter user's shit post once in a while without having to write a dissertation on them which aint gonna be likely for me and those like me lmaoo

Why couldn't there have been a discussion post about this before the changes? Obviously people against it are going to be more vocal but it seems very unpopular based on the comments, and I agree with others that the names aren't great, purposes are confusing, and I don't follow the logic of why these changes were made. The name change makes sense, but if this is about increasing the effort of the anti-reactionary posts I don't believe this will achieve that.

Like others have said, we don't have energy to effortpost all the time and simple tear-downs serve an important function for bonding and catharthis. Forcing effort in posts will just reduce posting, not increase effortposts imo. If it's about discouraging misanthropic views, maybe too much dunking increases misanthropy for some, but to me these 'dunks' are an antidote to misanthropy because I can see there are others who want to shame these reactionary views, as opposed to my experience in more mainstream circles where there is wide agreement with the neoliberal or fascist worldviews.

i really think y'all worry too much about shit, like, I can't imagine even having the fucks to give that prompted the initial split between dunk/dredge tank

like idk just seems like a needless quest for overly complicated classification WHEN WE COULD ALL JUST POST EVERYTHING ON MAIN LIKE WE USED TO

Not a good decision. Changing the name of the dunk tank is fine if you care that much about the origin of the term, but nuking the comms and replacing them with new, far more restrictive ones (with opaque names that don't convey their intent at all) is just a bad choice imo, and I hope it gets rolled back.

I have a more detailed comment with my issues in this thread, and other people have brought up other issues, but can I just say how dull and serious the names of both of the new comms are? I thought we were trying have a good time around here
