Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.

Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

1 out of every ~200 Russians, overwhelmingly young, formerly healthy men, are now seriously wounded or dead because of Putin's ill-conceived ambitions. Christ.
For reference, the last time the US lost anywhere CLOSE to that proportion of its population in war was WW2.
And this is why the government is now restricting birth control. Need more soldiers for the grinder.
I think if they drag the war out so long that kids not even conceived today are potential soldiers, then soldiers will be the least of their problems.
It’s also about the economic impact of loosing that many people.
I don’t know of many places where polygamy is tolerated, and unless they go that route, if they lose 20% of their male population…. That’s a 20% reduction in that generation’s children too.
Granted, I wouldn’t put it past Putin/the kremlin to get single women preggo by force. Assholes.

The US did it.
We were invading the Middle East since before I was born, and I almost signed up to get free school when I wanted to be a doctor. I would have likely treated soldiers that were still being wounded in the Middle East.
Oh, totally. Afghanistan had multiple generations tied up in it, which is horrendous.
However, the US also didn’t take nearly the losses that Russia is throwing “into the grinder” as the parent post puts it.

Can confirm. My graduate CS class was almost entirely young men from China. There were two or three young women from China as well. And, including myself, I think three non-international students (all of us Caucasian).
International students are very profitable for universities, and there are a lot of young Chinese men applying for them in the US. And Australia, from what I've read.

Yeah but that's volunteers to get their sentence taken away. So far they haven't forced a uniform on prisoners yet. Just distant minorities.
Maybe not even russian prisoners want to get a one way trip to the meat grinder.

Not to be a downer but what is Ukraine's casualties at? I'm sure this rate of loss of Russian young men is going to kneecap population levels there but I can only imagine how screwed Ukraine's will be as well.
It's a good question. Ukraine doesn't disclose that. They're high though. There are a few estimates that vary widely and sometimes include civilian casualties. This NYT piece published today cites an unnamed American official estimating that Ukrainian casualties are "a bit more than half of Russia’s casualties, or more than 57,500 killed and 250,000 wounded." (Archive) This WSJ article from about a month ago cites an unnamed Ukrainian official putting the estimate at 80k killed, 400k wounded. (Archive)
