I'm going blind into this series (I didn't read the source), so you can pretty much imagine how big of an urge to punch the screen Tobias is giving me. "Waaah, you're too tall!" "Waah, don't drink so much", "Waah" aaah sod off you muppet!

Work-wise Dahlia is clearly a one-of-a-kind artificer. It's easy to think "I'm going to reinvent [thing] in isekai!", but that diligence that she shows - researching things, thinking on how to solve issues etc. - is not for everyone. And yet it's what makes someone exceptional at a craft.

It's a bit strange watching this episode while knowing what's going to happen from the Crunchyroll series description, the series poster, and the OP. It might've been nice to binge the first 3 episodes, like how some shows (like Oshi No Ko) have extended first episodes.

I like Tobias, in the way that he is self-centered and exceedingly unlikable. I already want him to go away.

Without Carlo's guidance, what will Dahlia do? I want to get to the meat of the series. Hopefully we'll get a taste in the next episode.

Hopefully we’ll get a taste in the next episode.

I suppose we have to wait for episode 4 for that. I like the slow pace though. As a source reader it’s nice to see an adaptation that isn’t rushed to hell and back for once.

Dahlia light novel
He'll fuck off shortly enough. He ends up being a cheating piece of shit, and Dahlia starts on her own path as a magic toolmaker.

Without Carlo’s guidance, what will Dahlia do?

I also was thinking the same thing with the “trying to run from the oncoming rainstorm” metaphor for “You cannot run from the inevitability of death”. Dahliaʼs sudden desire to create raincoats felt like foreboding that she will want to create immortality-granting magic tools to help people like her father outrun mortality.

Same!

I actually hope he stays for the drama and character growth.

This fucking guy... He said this line and a wave of hate washed over me that I didn't realize I had in me. I have seen this kind of thing first hand in my personal life and I had such a negative reaction to Tobias as this episode kept going. I knew from the series synopsis that Dahlia was not going to live happily ever after with this guy, but damn...

I only hope that we can speed through the parts of the story where Tobias plays a role quickly.

I think the author is communicating their dislike of senior coworkers trying to play matchmaker with their kōhais.

Things moved a little bit too quickly for my liking. Also, why is Dahlia so easily accepting of Tobias' dumb demands?

The shadows in this show also don't make sense at all. There's always some straight lines somewhere on characters, that don't always match up elsewhere, don't match the lighting, keep changing positions depending on the viewing angle or are way too static. I don't know why I'm so bothered about this but I am haha. It's distracting me.

The shadows in this episode were SO distracting. It sounds like the studio outsourced a lot of the animation to a company that may have sub-contracted a studio in North Korea, and so a bunch of work had to get redone last minute, which definitely would explain the rough quality this episode has. Hopefully this will mostly affect early episodes and later ones will be able to get at least some of the time they need to look a bit better, but only time will tell.

As for the actual content, last episode I was worried we were going to lose Carlo before the story actually got started, and it turns out I was right T_T

But it's really funny to me that we're 2 episodes into a romance anime and the main romantic interest still has yet to even show his face. Maybe next time, lol.
