Another angle below. Very dinged up and the end and legs were missing, but seemed like to much hardwood to pass to.

Appears to be made out of some kind of tree

This was funny as shit. All the people that downvoted you can get fucked

Well, you're not wrong.

Judging by the knots my best guess would be pine. Hard to tell without seeing it in person

Upvoted. Another indication that it’s pine would be its softness. Can your fingernail put a dent in it? Are there dents on the top from everyday use?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 5 months ago (1 children)

But note that treatment and age can cause the pine to become harder. So even if it doesn't dent easily with a fingernail, I would still think it's pine.

Yeah, I can pretty easily scratch it with my fingernail, which seems the same as a 2x4 scrap and much softer than some oak and maple scraps I have around.

Also looking more closely at the bigger scratches and screw holes I see lighter wood visible, I was a bit fooled by the stain on the bottom.

Another vote for pine.

If it is so heavy that when you try to move it, it makes you say "shit i didn't expect it to be this heavy", then it might not be pine.

It was super heavy. But I have a hard time judging whether it's heavier than a similar bulk of 2x4s.

Appears to be a cellulose fiber based lignin matrix

McDonalds milkshake then. Gotcha.

I'm almost certain this is pine, the grain lines are very spaced apart, suggesting it was grown very rapidly too, so probably not a very old table.

Another vote for pine. That said, I think that pine gets a bit of a bad rap. Other than its softness, it's a fine wood to use. I have pallet and firewood laminated desk that has it's fair share of pine in it and the pine strips are not any worse for wear than anything else.

The knots and colouring suggest pine, I'd say.

I think I'm leaning toward pine as well. You could cut into it and smell, I imagine most people now the scent of pine since it's a popular air freshener/household cleaner scent for some reason (I'm from a pine forest, pine doesn't smell 'clean' to me.)

Walnut It is an Ethan Allen table.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Walnut isn't so pale and doesn't have knots like that.

I was hoping for hardwood! Seems like it's probably not, though.

[email protected] is at least partly right, it's an Ethan Allen table from the 80's. Link to below shows what it looks like with all it's parts. This website also lists it as pine.

The internet wasn't really a thing back then so it's unlikely we'll find much more unless there is a digitized catalog posted somewhere.
