I don't normally enjoy sports, but watching that one go down to a shootout was pretty intense.

Possibly it's my own biase, but does it seem like Australian soccer teams in general do less of the flopping around pretending to be hurt thing? And the women's teams from any country do it far less than the men's?

That's women's football in general. Fall down? Get up and keep going!

I much prefer it.

It’s the same in rugby league. They just get on with it.

Me either due to the whole "bread and circuses" thing that I have going on but I was with people and I'll admit it was a decent game to watch, one that I got invested in. Could have gone either way the entire time; congrats to the Aussies and bad luck to the French.

That was insane. That shootout was an emotional rollercoaster.

Huge win! What a tense game!

Congrats Aussies, very well played. The turnout here in NZ and over in Oz has been awesome too. Crowd definitely got their value from this game.

i remember when the complainers were saying it would be empty stadiums and a big waste of time. glad to prove them wrong again

Of all the games I've watched in my life, that was one of the most epic, perfectly matched games I've ever seen. 0 0 for the first two halves. 0 0 for the next two 15 minutes halves. Then the shoot out to rival any shoot out in history. Well done France, you were truly Australia's equal every step of the way.

Until we annihilated you!!!!

Bwwaaaa hahahhaha !

Ahem.

GG everyone. GG.

Why are they called Matildas? Couldn't find it in the article

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Probably a play on the popular Australian folk song "Waltzing Matilda."

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Pretty sure people voted for it back in the 90s

What an amazing game.

I'm not really much of a sport watcher. But I've found myself following the Matilda's this world cup - I think it's the fact we're hosting and they're a home team.

So tense! Helps that soccer is pretty easy for a newbie to follow.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's probably also the fact that they're winning

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

That helps too 🤣 but this was the first Matilda's game I watched.

What an incredible moment. Loved seeing all the kids in the crowd so hyped up for the Tillies!

Didn't watch but saw a replay of the shootout, talk about tense lol

And now we know they will face the Lionesses (England) on Wednesday.
