iOS app soon pls, I miss DT and I don't wanna use Reddit for at least another month >:(

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I’m using wefwef (it’s a web app), very similar to Apollo in design and can add other federated servers into one app.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Ooo thanks skye! Better than what I've been doing at least @.@

This one seems most decent so far!

Hmm this site is a Progressive Web App. 'Installing' it through Firefox mobile gave it a pretty decent app-like experience

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

huh interesting, but also way too many hoops to jump through just to make it bearable >.< fingers crossed for the app eh!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah. The lack of notifications being a prime issue. I mean, check out the timestamps here =P

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Can beta test la if you want haha but will be lacking features/got issues. I think Memmy and Liftoff are quite feature complete already

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

last i heard, sometimes login still got issue >.<

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Ah I’m using Memmy right now, it’s on the App Store dy and seems to work ok.

At the mean time, have you tried wefwef? Also mlem is quite popular

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

duwan. If I can help it, I never want to go back. Fuck spez.

Q to the techies: would link clickthroughs from instances and just fedi in general be recognizable to the web admin of the news sites (for example)? Just thinking how soon before news and public sites notice (esp with twt being on fire, reddit being on its way too, and fb/ig being unnavigable) fedi visits and actually start reorienting themselves.

(It's so embarassing - I can find Indonesian media, Singaporean media and journalists, Filipino tak payah cakaplah - even their institutions and unis are coming onboard, even Thai news and public sector content in English! But Malaysia........ KWSP or khazanah got stock in twitter or what?)

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

you're probably thinking of the "referer" http header.

it's certainly possible that the admins of news sites could be tracking that, but monyet.cc sets a "referer-policy" of "same-origin", which as far as I know prevents that from leaking to other sites.

kbin.social, on the other hand, doesn't seem set this policy (but I just looked at the front page, and didn't investigate further).

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ooo interesting! this is where you can see I'm so outdated - is this the same stuff that used to inform blog pingbacks? Or just about anything in a google site kit dashboard that tracks source of the referral?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

pingbacks use a different technology, see the "notification medium" row of the table in this wikipedia page.

as for google site kit, I'm afraid I'm not familiar with that, based on what I could find by googling, I think the answer may be yes (at least, it may be one of the methods used), but you would need someone more familiar with site kit to answer that conclusively.

Aha, this is helpful!

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Is it just me or that the quality of comments on r/Malaysia are getting worst? Actually reddit as a whole is getting shittier by day for me.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Seems like a lot of the ppl still active now are the “we don’t need Nazi mods” types haha

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

"you can't stop us from posting content we stolen from facebook and twitter and tiktok!!!"

Cue my username

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

For sure, the quality seems to have gone down over the blackout. Noticed quite a few regulars stopped commenting too and many new accounts filling the space ig?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

This is why we take refuge here 🙏

What are you testing 👀?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

posting from my single user instance

seems like display name is not sync across 😧

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

:o did you set up your own server?

Which display name? I saw "theone" here

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ye I wanted to try and see how it works, running on a spare Rpi4

this is my display name - |💀| in my instance

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

that's interesting, are you using ansible/docker (is docker available for rpi?) to run lemmy like what monyet.cc does?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm using docker, don't see why ansible wouldn't work either. You have to install official docker separately into Raspbian.

Yunohost is another option but I think they are using older Lemmy version

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

thanks for letting me know. I looked on lemmy's docker hub page, but the latest arm build I could find is one of 0.17.3, does this mean you compiled lemmy from source on your rpi4?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I ended up with this. Quick summary what I did

  • SSD boot setup
  • Install official docker / docker compose
  • Run Lemmy-Easy-Deploy
  • sort out TLS issue with my other reverse proxy
  • sort out cloudflare API

Browse all the 'communities' to get the feeds, otherwise it wouldn't pull the contents over

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

okay, thank you. how is lemmy's memory usage so far?

also, forgive me for being so curious, have you tried hosting any other fediverse-related software?

I've been following the epicyon project, but wow, the install instructions is really of the "do everything manually" type…so it is hard to get enough motivation to follow them through.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

theone: have you subscribed to any new communities on monyet.cc since changing your display name?

maybe you could try that, subscribing to a new community here (or maybe, unsubscribing then resubscribing, if you've already subscribed to all the available communities). I think doing this will cause a resync of your profile.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I thought to myself "maybe once my reddit app dies I'll have a looksie at twitter for personalized news" and now twitter is throwing a hissy fit too

I have no idea where to go now, I'm still not sure how this site works

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I’d recommend using an app (I’m using wefwef), and adding the servers you want on here. I added lemmy.world, kbin.social and ofc monyet.cc.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Hey guys, I just made an account here after hearing that making an account on the lemmy instance nearer your location would improve loading times. It is true loading speeds are great but I am seeing only few of the communities from other instances. For example I can't find the [email protected] over here on monyet.cc Why is that so?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

It's available via this link.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

The federation is quite wonky so you ought to try typing the whole url in the search bar, and try it a few times. First time i do this i tried searching for woodworking on lemmy world, have to try refreshing a few times before it connect.

Iirc someone mentioned that they have to copy the other instance into this server so you could visit it, maybe that's the reason it couldn't connect because it hasn't done copying yet. But once you done so, other people will have easier time visiting that community.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yep it takes some time to copy it over.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

yeah yesteday when I posted this comment I couldn't find it but now I do. Btw, are there any plans of upgrading money.cc to new lemmy version? I really like the new top sorting features of the new update and wish we have it here!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

there was a short discussion about the upgrade over here, and based on dcx's response the admins are planning to upgrade.

what's not decided yet is whether monyet.cc will wait for lemmy 0.18.1 to be officially released, or jump onto a release candidate like what lemmy.world and quite a number of other instances have done.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

oh great to hear!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

when searching for communities, watch out for the couldnt_find_object error, that can mean you've got the url syntax wrong, usually (also the error doesn't appear every time, and I've only seen it in the browser not apps, but when it does you should double check the url)
