US Senator gives Bytedance their First Amendment case on a silver platter.

It'll be funny to see the courts try to ignore the brazen admissions like this.

[–] [email protected] 58 points 6 months ago (1 children)

real tension between corporation so all the rights and foreign so none of the rights

[–] [email protected] 72 points 6 months ago (2 children)

idk all signs point to Bytedance not budging on this so it will be really funny if this backfires and tiktok becomes unavailable in the US.

Might see youtube shorts take off or something totally unforeseen pretty wild shit all around.

someone mentioned the EU might force apple to allow side-loading in an unrelated suit and that would make the ban meaningless

[–] [email protected] 47 points 6 months ago

from what I’ve heard side-loading will only be enabled in the EU.

the fanboys have told me this is a good thing, uwu smol bean apple is just protecting kids from downloading Clash_of_Clans_Hack_2024_Working.ipa monke-beepboop

wonder if a tiktok ban changes their mind

[–] [email protected] 43 points 6 months ago

That’s what happened in India after TikTok got banned there. YouTube shorts took off and so did another platform called Josh.

My only concern with YouTube shorts taking off is that their algorithm is a far-right cesspool.

Honestly it would be 12x funnier if Bytedance got the WTO to declare this in violation of the charter and threatened to enforce the relevant punishments on the US if it doesn’t acquiesce.

[–] [email protected] 24 points 6 months ago

WTO has no enforcement mechanism because the US has refused to appoint more judges or some shit

[–] [email protected] 18 points 6 months ago (1 children)

WTO is one of the tools of the Western hegemony, it will never do this.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 6 months ago

Probably not. But if it came to that at least it would further undermine the illusion of “the international rules-based order”

may Allah awaken the people and help them to see the evil doings of Israel and the United States.

[–] [email protected] 84 points 6 months ago

Yes. The US wants to take down any social media it can't control. The narrative was supposed to stay pro-Israel, and it didn't, and now Uncle Sam is PISSED.

A good rule of thumb is also to take note of what Americas puppet countries are doing.

Australia is going after Twitter at the moment, for example.

[–] [email protected] 83 points 6 months ago

Same energy as John Bolton going on live television and telling everyone the reason why the US is sanctioning Venezuela is that "it's about the oil"

At work atm, so I don't have time to go find a video of it. But I distinctly remember it happened.

"State propaganda is losing reach."

[–] [email protected] 79 points 6 months ago (2 children)

we already knew this but it's mildly surprising they'd admit it publicly

[–] [email protected] 55 points 6 months ago

reading this like he-admit-it

[–] [email protected] 74 points 6 months ago (2 children)

How can we possibly manufacture consent unless we seize the means of information distribution. Also, TikTok hurts meta and Xitter financially so really it should be nationalized (sold to another US backed corporation). Let the free market decide etcetera

every day I curse Hoover and his associative state

Behold! The invisible hand!

[–] [email protected] 64 points 6 months ago

Nice freedom of the press ya got there.

"We...worked on this story for a year...and...he just...he tweeted it out."

Doesn't most of the momentum on the tiktok ban predate oct 7th?

[–] [email protected] 59 points 6 months ago

Facebook was behind an earlier attempt during the Trump admin.

[–] [email protected] 39 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

Yeah...TBH this seems more like either:

A) The thing that caused them to expedite something they already wanted to do.

B) This is less the quiet part out loud and more the thing they are allowed to say out loud in public. Like its more palatable and acceptable to call this the "end hamas grooming act" as opposed to the "Facebook and Meta relief act".

I think both are probably actual motivations that overlap.

[–] [email protected] 53 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

No shit AIPAC and ADL money are one of main reasons why this was even passed so quickly.

[–] [email protected] 47 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I’m going to send these in to the vergecast hosts who dismissed the Zionist argument out of hand.

Building a PC was too hard for them.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago

They are so funny.

[–] [email protected] 46 points 6 months ago

obvious motivation is obvious. shocked-pikachu

B-but CCP Xitler bad 😱😱😱😱😱😱

[–] [email protected] 23 points 6 months ago

To the surprise of NO-ONE

Their data is/was/will continue to be held in the states no matter what. This is not about privacy or their psyop about tiktok being a china ploy.

This is Israel killing (or failing to kill) the world's ability to see the shit they're doing

[–] [email protected] 18 points 6 months ago

Mask off moment.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 6 months ago

Fun fact, the thumb of a senator that said this is a failson of the billionaire finance ghoul that owns the Chicago Cubs

Haven't they been talking about banning tik tok longer than the palestine/hamas issue?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

Yes but the initial excuse was "China bad" which didn't have much momentum

Now that it's full of pro Palestine content and they've created excuses like "it's writhe with condoning antisemitism and terrorism". And 10 o clock news watchers lap it up.

I'm not defending tiktok btw, shits a terminally online slot machine of slop content.
