Fun fact about monitors turning on slowly: did you know Windows has a bluescreen code for that?

The WIN32K_POWER_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT bug check has a value of 0x0000019C. This indicates that Win32k did not turn the monitor on in a timely manner.

That's right, Windows will panic and throw a bluescreen if your monitors take a little too long to wake up. Had the pleasure of dealing with this suddenly becoming an issue and causing wide bluescreens on wakeup after an update back in mid-2024, on any Surface Dock using DisplayPort with specific Acer monitors.

It's really easy to change your positions when there were never any principles behind it either way.

This is what I'm so desperate for people to understand: these are empty people. In terms of politics, they don't have beliefs in the way you and I do. They have hollowed out that part of themselves. This is why debate or the introduction of new facts never changes their minds, because it never made up their mind in the first place. Such a change requires your positions to be propped up by genuine belief in what you think is the right thing, where that prop can be knocked over.

These people belong to a team, a clan, a cult, however you want to phrase it. The only thing that matters is that their side is in power and uses that power to act against those who aren't. Any means to that end is valid to them. They'll happily switch to whichever position is most convenient for them without missing a beat. They're only justifying it to you to keep you busy and distracted, they never really believed a word they said. They just chose the words they thought would be most effective to win.

The founder of Drupal posted recently about this self-hosted and completely solar-powered personal site he made, in Boston of all places.

He describes the hardware, software, and the challenges he ran into while setting it all up. The site even includes automatically updating statistics about the system and battery. There's no backup or fail over, so if the battery drains due to cloudy or cold weather, the website will simply go offline for a while and he's fine with that.

You should know that the guy you cited in the second link, Srid, is a well-known right-wing shit-stirrer who is banned from basically all NixOS spaces because he cannot peacefully coexist. He literally gets up day after day with the seemingly sole purpose of fueling drama and causing problems. Don't take his opinion at face value, he wants to see the project burn down and this colors his interpretation of events.

NixOS is going through a rocky moment for sure, but there's no indication it will implode currently.

When people recognize they were wrong about something, as smugly satisfying as it may be it's not actually helpful to tell them that they should have been correct sooner.

Eelco has agreed to step down from the NixOS foundation board. Over the next two weeks, a constitutional assembly will be appointed to draft a constitution to democratically govern Nix/NixOS.

There's 102 people mentioned in that commit and two of them happen to meet in the comments of a meme thread on Lemmy of all places. I love the Internet.

Look, I'm usually first in line to shit on Canonical, but I can't get mad at them adopting AGPL. This is objectively the best license for server software. Incus should also switch to AGPL for all Canonical code, and seek to have contributors license their code as AGPL as well.

I will however point out the hypocrisy and inconsistency of it, because the Snap server is still proprietary after all of this time. If this is their "standard for server-side code" then apply it to Snaps or quit lying to us.

Well I wasn't gonna downvote before, but now I am. Can't stand this kind of fragility.

They don't believe in copyright law so they don't mind whoever infringe on them. Especially since here it would make the proprietary driver work better.

I don't believe in copyright law, but I especially don't believe in partially enforced copyright law. Nvidia doesn't get to use copyright to protect their proprietary code while infringing on the copyright of FOSS.

We all go down this hole at the start. The truth is, you should only reserve IPs if you actually need it to stay the same. You don't need to check IPs as often as you think, I promise. The only segmentation and planning you should do for a home network is for subnets/vlans; LAN, Guest, IOT, Server, etc.

Instead of managing the IP addresses, just manage hostnames. Make sure every device with a customizable hostname is easily identifiable. This will help you so much more in the long run.
