I think the US is just screwed. They burned through their natural resources and minerals early and are now paying the price for the reckless laissez faire hyper industrialization that speed rushed the US into peaking in the 1950s. Now the US is a dry desolate wasteland (literally, Lake Mead is at it's lowest historical level ever at this moment). Hyper capitalism is basically the economic equivalent of taking performance enhancing drugs to get ahead.

My great great grandfather had his farm collectivized in the early USSR and was salty about it. When I visited a relative and looked at the old family album there was a photo of orthodox priests doing the Nazi salute, what that was doing in there I can only guess. My grandfather at least from what I know was more neutral about the USSR and traveled there to meet relatives.

I think the US is calling the base withdrawal a "punishment" to save public face when really it's probably Spain kicking out them. Similar to how Trump made big talk about bringing Iran to the stone age to make it look like Iran surrendered when it was the other way around to anyone with actually the ability to read.

I've seen people defend capitalism unironically by arguing that you can just go run off in the woods if you don't like it, as if every square inch of land isn't privately owned.
