Fast and the Furious?

Is there a name for this phenomenon? Just did a group road trip and the hotel I picked ended up being shit. Guess whose value as a human went down as a result? Mine.

Why? I did my best, I researched, the online reviews were good. So why does every observation about the rude staff and funny smell reflect on me personally?

Almost compelling. Would have liked to see more indictment of Congress's unwillingness to do more than make speeches. They'll only oppose the budget for another news cycle or two and then not do anything to change after approving it with a sternly worded minority opposition.

I get why impeachment likely won't lead to a conviction but they should be putting forth articles of impeachment every week.

Between this and a couple of announcements of advancements in running local LLMs (colibri/ds4) means the bubble is almost over, right?

If only "acting in bad faith" actually meant something.

Bitch, those are the exact things I'm trying to keep my information away from. And, no, I don't trust Mozilla as far as I can throw them, either.

My recently widowed father (72) is planning a trip across the country to meet a woman who he claims called him by accident and with whom he has since built a romantic (remote) relationship. Here's what he's shared with me:

  • He received a "wrong number" call from a woman that led to a number of other conversations online and on the phone that started to take on a romantic tone.
  • He believes she is real because he has checked her out online, including validating that she is indeed the CEO of her company, is 40 years old, and is originally from Taiwan. Haven't seen this myself.
  • She says she runs this company with her brother in Canada and her father back in Taiwan. The details of the company were not clear to me.
  • They have exchanged photos but not video because her webcam is not working.
  • He is planning a trip to Los Angeles (from the East Coast of US) in a few months to meet her in person. She said her driver will pick him up at the airport.
  • No money has been asked for or sent, according to him.

This is obviously a scam, right? But, without there being an ask for money I can't figure out the angle and haven't been able to convince him to disengage.

It is either going to be an ask for money to help her overseas family or a "can't lose" investment in her company. I'm guessing she'll back out of the travel plans last minute so they never meet OR he's going go there and have his organs harvested.

Does anyone recognize this scam? What should we expect next? Has anyone else successfully talked their elderly loved ones out of one of these?

In other news, company says unexpected expenses in its technology segment are driving layoffs and site closures. Company CEO said in an interview with Forbes, "There's no way we could have predicted this challenge. In service to our customers and our shareholders we're right sizing our operations and reevaluating our strategic priorities. We'll continue to focus on creating value while being a leader in our industry and accelerating AI adoption in everything we do."

So fucking relatable. Recent experience: I called up my brother who is a car guy to get some help getting an old car started. He's worked on cars, farm equipment, and sold car parts. He knows his shit.

I gave him what I was seeing and what I had done and he sends back a screen shot of what ChatGPT said about what I explained to him.

I would have rather had a 30 minute conversation of us going, "I don't know. Have you tried this? Yeah, oh, well, then, um, hmm. Maybe it is the defanglinator. Or the wires to the pulsometerizer." We're exercising our brains, enjoying each other's conversation, solving a problem together... which is more important than actually solving the problem and why I called you, you dope!

Oh, and the LLM response ended up not being relevant or helpful. We're all fucking cooked.

Crazy how fast she pulled back on that. Like she has been trained to not allow that sort of talk. It was almost instant.

I was expecting something subtle, some sort of resistance from within type stuff.

Warehouses, barracks, offices, hotels, and factory buildings are outstanding targets for simple sabotage. They are extremely susceptible to damage, especially by fire.

Not so much.
