It seems like a good idea but we'll never know unless we try

that email is compromised they got bigger issues.

Sending an email doesn't have authentication. I can send an email as literally anyone. It's a very trusting protocol.

Now, if your company is particularly good they might have set up protections from this. But it's not required, and not super common.

It really bothers me that we've landed on the phrase clanker when toaster was already available.

The system of nature is destructive, it is finite

It is just as accurate to say the system of nature is creative and infinite. With things constantly evolving into other things and eventually evolving into heat.

You wouldn't say that salt being dissolved in water has destroyed the salt. It simply created saltwater. Your choice about what is destruction and what is creation is arbitrary.

You can prolong its existence

The universe will exist infinitely. Nothing you do changes or destroys that. When you talk about minimizing impact, you're talking about the impact to the environment that's sustains consciousness. If that were to be destroyed, that would be detrimental. You're trying to preserve that.

But even if we nuked the whole planet a hundred times over, the universe is fine. It's just converted some matter to a different form.

My point is, your entire framework is actually working against the universe. The universe is a constant state of change trending towards heat. You're doing your best to minimize that trend towards heat. To keep things from changing. To minimize your impact. That is completely against how the universe functions. But it is completely in favor of keeping consciousness around.

That is ridiculous.

If I want to paint apples, and you want a painting of pears, it's not ableist for me to tell you no. It's not ablist to iterate out your possible options for getting a pear painting either. And that's what he's done.

Now, the entire painting profession might be ableist in that there are certainly barriers to entry. But it's not a single artist's responsibility to fix painting as a whole.

My point is, if you truly think the situation with raync is ableist, help develop tools so that more people can program. Enable people to program. Don't just shout down the guy who said "go program". That doesn't help.

Please. Men vastly outnumber women in the legislature. If those numbers flipped there would be DRASTIC change.

I've been selfhosting a while. I run around 15 distinct services in docker containers, all on a single machine with a medium sized disk. It's a small form factor, and I recently had to add space, so I've attached an external USB storage device.

It feels clunky.

At what point does a performant SAN/NAS make sense more than local storage? When did you make the jump?

More Shorts?? (lemmy.world)

I'm new to newpipe and I'm going to ask a question that about 80% of y'all are going to freak out over, but I can't find the answer anywhere else.

I want to watch YouTube Shorts without ads but with the same sort of interface as Shorts. I've subscribed to my favorite creators in newpipe, but I can't find a section where I can flip through Shorts as a single feed. I currently have to click into each creator to see their Shorts tabs. Does newpipe have a Shorts feed setting that I'm missing?

And before you bother commenting: Yes I'm a degenerate. Yes long-form is 'better'. You're all right. I don't care that my brain is rotted. Let me wallow in my filth. Preferably without ads.

Streaming services are expensive, and I'm tired of not owning anything. I was thinking of starting a video co-op where you buy-in with a DVD/VHS/etc and then you own a share of the co-op and can stream from its library.

Q: Why not just let people access your streaming server?

A: In the US at least, it's illegal to stream movies you don't own or don't have the license to stream. By participating in the co-op, when you stream a movie, ownership of that physical media and the digital copy is temporarily transferred to you.

Q: Why not just steal it? yarrr

A: Most people here would, for sure. But plenty of less tech savvy folks can't do that safely. And there is some value in not helping my community do illegal shit.

Q. The hardware will be expensive to run

A: At first, nah. If it grows to a size where that's a problem, then I'm doing something right and will figure it out.

Q: Libraries offer free streaming services, why not use that?

A: They are expensive for the library and don't have great selection. Though I guess mine might not have great selection either. People might 'bank' garbage.

So it's basically a 'physical media (and corresponding digital copy) storage and trading platform'.

Crazy idea? Already done? Stupid and impractical? Help get this idea out of my head.

I think I've hit a wall here. I set up both Collabara (CODE) and OnlyOffice (documentserver), and either I'm doing it wrong, or both require Nextcloud to provide the document editing UI. I really don't want to install Nextcloud. It feels like overkill.

Am I doing it wrong, or do both of those require Nextcloud.

Shtrawberry. Drinking shtraw as well.

Any time I try and pronounce it with a hard S and not SH, it ends up sounding like a bad 90s parody of a gay man. I practically flounce.

I can't be the only one..

I feel like I'm missing something with this card. I currently use a 2% cash back card, so 3% seems like a simple upgrade. I pay my card off every month without fail, and have for years. This card would use my house as collateral, which poses additional risk if I default.

Has anyone else looked into this or gotten one? Is there some catch I'm missing? I can't figure out how they're making money on this.

I have a Precision 3260 Compact (https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/workstations-isv-certified/precision-3260-compact-workstation/spd/precision-3260-workstation/s106dpt3260us_vp) with no standalone GPU. I also have an aging gaming desktop with a GTX 1070 and an i5 inside. I am trying to figure out a way to get the 1070 to work inside the Precision and it's driving me nuts.

The Precision doesn't have a standard micro-ATX motherboard, so I can't simply mount it in my larger case. Even if I could, the pcie slot is much shorter than the standard. On top of that, the GPU is longer than the entire case.

I'm willing to get creative, but I'm out of ideas.

Our town's water keeps failing to meet DEP standards, so I'm investing in a filtration system for our drinking water. What I think I'm looking for is:

  • Has a tank, since there are 5 of us
  • Filters out lead, PFAS, PFOA, etc. (Which is why I'm leaning towards RO)
  • Good warranty and customer service, for when something inevitably goes wrong
  • Remineralization (picky about water taste)
  • UV (maybe?)

Does anyone have recommendations for a quality brand, or one that they've had for years that they like? I'm not sure where to even start.

What are these wires? (thelemmy.club)
submitted 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) by surewhynotlem@lemmy.world to c/diy@sh.itjust.works

I bought a house a few months ago and I'm still trying to figure out all the wiring. I found these coming out of a cabinet in the kitchen.

I think (?) the black one is a cut-off coax cable. There's a LOT of coax in this house, so that seems straightforward (but I would still love if someone can confirm!)

I'm not sure about the other ones. They don't look electric, as I'd expect electric to be black + white + copper, like the rest of the house.

There is supposedly a speaker system in the house (I see speakers) but I haven't figured it out yet. Could that be power for the speakers? I'm not familiar with speaker wire setup. If it's speakers, why would there be so many wires?

I'm looking for an inexpensive label maker that can print small labels. I need to label various things around my house for my sanity (outlet/breaker mapping, coax endpoint mapping, etc).

I was going to buy a NIIMBOT D110, but then I saw in their FAQ that they put an IC (chip) into their labels and the printer won't print if it can't sense it. I really don't want to support a company that DRMs their consumables, if I can help it.

Can anyone recommend a good, small, inexpensive label maker? Preferably one that doesn't have sketchy DRM embedded.

I've got about 1/4 acre with some odd shapes and walkways. I'm looking to invest in a robotic mower, but the boundary wire ones don't seem to work with my layout. It doesn't need to have clean mow lines or anything, I just want my grass to be shorter.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a non-wired robot mower? Preferably one that integrates with HA, but that's not required.

If you do, what are the pros/cons of the unit?

I was reading about how the EU is thinking of reducing the lead used in ammunition because it's polluting the environment. I wonder if regular lead exposure at the firing range is addling people's brains.
