I have recently comes to term with my faith. I grew up missionary Baptist and it wasn’t charismatic or anything but even as a kid it kindof feels ridiculous and I started to just try to take the moral lessons and that’s all. Science and astrophysics have always interested me at a hobbiest level but it wasn’t until recently the way it all works it quite beautiful. I am fully atheist but it’s all so ridiculous I would accept a God somehow started this all, but not really. Explore approachable science books, podcasts, and YouTube videos (and other federated stuff, if it exists). It is so fucking miraculous we exist in this vast empty void that (at the same time) is unimaginably large. Our planet and life is a miracle. Even if microbes exist out there, the fact we got to the point of “reason” is crazy! Any tip of quantum physics rules one way or the other and the universe is something else entirely. The way atoms come together and how we use them today is a species is miraculous. Humanity could really do anything if we were convicted enough. The whole “we are made of star stuff” is also quite deep when you go through the whole cycle with it. We are quite literally the universe somehow scraping itself together through energy, time, and space to culminate (for now) in some piece of itself that can question itself and move indepdently, reason, etc. Dope. If there is any reason to be good to one another is that we are soooo special. All life. And this planet! Hippy status activated. I don’t know if this changes my behavior but it can be some good feelings to pocket for rainy days.

What if cinematic? What if action? What if diverse? What if goofy? What if old? What if young? Oh no. You cracked the secret!

Not a reliable source here, I had to take an eastern world history class between 1500 - 1900 in college and I very much didn’t want to be there. Opium was big product in west china from the poppy plants and seeds that grew easily there. So the times I know of they were using ships for some trade already. There was a divided nation and Japan was known for coming in and pillaging and fucking things up over and over. Britain came into the scene, took advantage of that, and established a colonial trade of tea. Opiate use was used as a way to control the local people, at times, made illegal at times. It was just a cluster fuck for decades and a bit of the reason opium isn’t normalized in Europe today as eastern cultures grabbed back power over their industries. Idk. You are better off going on a Wikipedia dive!

Opium was a major problem in parts of history. Especially China/Silk Road times

I experimented with milk varieties over the years and it is VERY dependent on brand, type of milk, and time. I only add time because if you stick to any brand for any amount of time you will inevitably come to a day where you see they changed the recipe and cheapened out somehow. The cheap oat milks are always the worst and emulate a 1% dairy option IMO. It’s all about your opinion. If you just want oat milk as a coffee creamer, I would recommend finding an oat option that is sold a creamer. They are overpriced and can be too sweet so watch sugar content on the back labels before buying. Explore!

I highly recommend you check out his last…15 years of filmography. He’s quite a solid actor!

My friend is a camera operator and is looking to take two SSDs together for a portable raid. AFAIK modern raid like that is an old school approach. I recommended he set up a little server or the easy way out and just look for a JBOD enclosure. Am I wrong? Are there trustworthy enclosures that handle the raid without much set-up today?

I think it’s the fact that Trump acts and surrounds himself with homophobic people so the idea of him giving head to his enemy he’s openly complained about is hilarious to no end. That and the actual implications with Putin holding the photos over his head.

It seems there is a big bet on the value of “human to human” interactions on Reddit. Certainly that makes federated communities easy treasure to pirate? Does anything stop bots from web scraping/data-mining everything we say? I often think about contributing to PeerTube instead of Google YouTube but I feel like my content would be scraped by even more nefarious services quite quickly. Edit: Thanks for the feedback. Makes sense. Double edged sword of the internet. Still makes me hesitate to contribute.

With the recent news, VPN bans being tested in western countries and even states like Michigan toying with new internet censorship; it’s had me thinking that I need to up my self hosting game. I currently use Truenas scale electric eel and I really am a novice with no formal education. I have a myriad of apps running, learned through YouTube tutorials, documentation, and AI. I tunnel out some of these services via cloudflare zero trust to a domain. I’ve got pi-hole running on the network and a VPN on my windows machine but that’s about it. It’s great! It works! It’s fun to tinker with and has allowed my family to ditch a lot of subscriptions. Browsing around, though, I see a lot of comments about different ways to secure servers. Everytime I try to learn about something such as VPS, reverse proxies it feels like an inundation of too much information and differing opinions. It seems like there are so many ways to do it that I really have no clue where to begin. I also don’t want to break what is currently working for me.

Anyone have a good idea on good sources to educate myself? Is it vital I learn how to run some sort of local service? How would hard government crackdown shutdown VPNs and what could a self-hoster do to avoid that? Be gentle. Thanks.

I am a filmmaker and have shot in 6k+ resolution since 2018. The extra pixels are great for the filmmaking side. Pixel binning when stepping down resolutions allows for better noise, color reproduction, sharpened details, and great for re-framing/cropping. 99% of my clients want their stuff in 1080p still! I barely even feel the urge to jump up to 4k unless the quality of the project somehow justifies it. Images have gotten to a good place. Detail won’t provide much more for human enjoyment. I hope they continue to focus on dynamic range, HDR, color accuracy, motion clarity, efficiency, etc. I won’t say no when we step up to 8k as an industry but computing as a whole is not close yet.
