In comment sections or in community pages, it's mostly an ocean of default avatars.

As a UI developer, that's always been a gripe because I put a lot of effort into making them look good and scale properly, etc. When I see 60-70% or more accounts sporting the default avatar, it makes me wonder why I even bother.

So, since this bugs me so much, figured I'd just ask.

Lemm.ee users I can understand because of the waiting period for uploads, but AFAIK, most instances don't have that restriction. Even then, there are plenty of .ee accounts that never bother to go back and set one.

I just want a free minimalist app on my phone that lets me enter a date on one column, and a bunch of other values in other columns. I don't even need it to perform math, but I won't mind if it does. Bonus points if I can export the data, but not a deal breaker. I don't need any sync.

I could be using Google Sheets but fuck Google and also I want to keep my data local and private on my phone.

Thanks

How do we know that the people on reddit aren't talking to bots? Now, or in the future? what about lemmy?

Even If I am on a human instance that checks every account on PII, what about those other instances? How do I know as a server admin that I can trust another instance?

I don't talk about spam bots. Bots that resemble humans. Bots that use statistical information of real human beings on when and how often to post and comment (that is public knowledge on lemmy).

Updating the situation:

I'd like to do the following: for the first 15 minutes, I want to play the video normally and then either not show the rest or display a frozen image instead.

I occasionally encounter corrupted videos that only show certain parts and not the entire content.

I was wondering if I could replicate such a situation based on my selection. However, I would also like the option to view the entire video normally if I choose to do so through an alternative method

So its been almost 10 years since i've swapped computer parts and I am nervous about this. Ive never done any homelab type thing involving big powerful parts, just dealt with average mid range consumer class parts in standard desktop cases.

I do computational work now and want to convert a desktop pc into a headless server with a beefy GPU. I bit the bullet and ordered a used P100 tesla 16gb. Based on what im reading, a new PSU may be in order as well if nothing else. I havent actually read labels yet but online info on the desktop model indicates its probably around a 450~ watt PSU.

The P100 power draw is rated at 250 W maximum. The card im using now draws 185 W maximum. Im reading that 600W would be better for just-in-case overhead. I plan to get this 700W which I hope is enough overhead to cover an extra GPU if I want to take advantage of nvidia CUDA with the 1070ti in my other desktop.

How much does the rest of the system use on average with a ryzen 5 2600 six core in a m4 motherboard and like 16gb ddr4 ram?

When I read up on powering the P100 though I stumbled across this reddit post of someone confused how to get it to connect to a regular consumer corsehair PSU. Apparently the p100 uses a CPU power cable instead of a PCIE one? But you cant use the regular cpu power output from the PSU. Acording to the post, people buy adapter cables with two input gpu cables to one output cpu cable for these cards.

Can you please help me with a sanity check and to understand what i've gotten myself into? I don't exactly understand what im supposed to do with those adapter cables. Do modern PSUs come with multiple GPU power outputs/outlets from the interface these days and I need to run two parallel lines into that adapter?

Thank you all for your help on the last post im deeply grateful for all the input ive gotten here. Ill do my best not to spam post with my tech concerns but this one has me really worried.

Bonus points for low impact and cheap/free. I have a foot injury and can't run/bike/hike for a bit.

Editing this to say:

  • Thank you all for the suggestions, I love the Lemmy community, and,
  • I know a lot of workouts can be done at home, and these are all great ideas. However, I bike/hike because I have trouble motivating myself to just work out as an activity. I trick myself using fun, but I don't know how to make indoor excercise exciting.

Hey fellow inhabitants of the Fediverse, particularly those lurking on Lemmy,

I've been thinking a lot lately about the nature of information, discourse, and where genuine human connection can still thrive online. It leads me back to platforms like this one.

We often talk about censorship in terms of direct bans or content removal, which is obviously a critical concern. But what about the more insidious forms of control? I'm talking about the subtle fiddling of algorithms, the deliberate hiding of certain content without outright deletion, the 'shadowbanning' that makes you feel like you're shouting into a void. How resistant is the decentralized nature of Lemmy, and the wider fediverse, to those kinds of pressures? It feels like the very architecture here might offer a unique defense, but I'm curious about the community's thoughts.

I know we're not exactly bursting at the seams with users, and frankly, if you're not already clued into how something like Lemmy works, you're probably never finding it through a casual search – SEO seems like a foreign concept here, battling potential duplicate content issues across instances. Is this quiet corner its strength, or its eventual downfall if the 'outside' world becomes too noisy?

Speaking of noise, it feels like nearly 90% of the content generated on the broader internet these days is starting to feel like it's churned out by LLMs. Autogenerated articles, comments, even entire 'conversations' that ring hollow. Is the Fediverse, specifically, a safe haven from that rising tide of artificial content? Does the human-centric, community-driven nature of these instances inherently push back against such automation?

I've looked into ActivityPub and other federation tools in the past, and my observation has often been that they've been adopted primarily by marginalized groups in society, seeking refuge from mainstream platforms. While that's incredibly valuable and a testament to their utility, what could truly happen to extend this concept, to genuinely get more people involved without compromising the very principles that make it appealing – decentralization, human curation, and resilience against algorithmic manipulation?

Just throwing it out there. Would appreciate any insights or theories.

I feel like I haven't heard anything from younger genz about games outside of 'streamer screamer' game of the week.

Is there anything really new and unique?

Say that you suddenly wake up in the year 1875. You end up talking to someone and you want to convince them that you’re from the future. How do you do that?

There's something profoundly relaxing and sound-bathic about it, spesh with a low pass filter or filtering out all the treble.

The House song from Mother 1 is amazing and so is the rest of the album in this light

Try it; I double-dare you

A) Nothing, just totally naked

B) What you're wearing and anything you carry with you (even if you're not carrying it right now) like a bag

C) What you're wearing, what you carry with you, and the contents of your home (it will be teleported within a few hundred metres on the surface in an accessible location, but obviously won't be connected to any services like electricity or water)

I just turned 40, and for the past 5 or so years I have been unhappy with the way I look.

All my life my metabolism has been insane, I could literally eat anything all day and not gain a gram, which has its downsides as well, but not the point.

My weight went up to 80kg and I formed a pot belly which I didnt like. One night I decided enough was enough, started a diet and exercise routine.

I did look at gyms but they are stupid expensive where I live, so I bought a resistance band thing from InnStar. Its like a Gymproluxe if you have been bombarded with Facebook ads. I use it every day for bench press, preacher curls, and some other things I dont know the name of.

I also started using a body weight exercise app that claimed results in a month.

The diet I thought would be hardest, but I immediately stopped all snacks and moved onto a weightloss protein shake which are amazing and I cant believe it took this long to taste them.

Its been a week, and I feel better, Im not sleeping as much, I look forward to exercise, I am much more physically active than before, but I dont feel like I look any different. I am not expecting instant results and I havent booked myself into a Mr World contest this weekend, but I am curious to hear real experiences of when people started to notice their own changes.

What happened to the internet to make it so that you now have to say "I'm not a medical expert, a beauty expert, an underpaid Walmart cashier struggling just to make ends meet just to lose my job to a robot or a piercing expert so take my advice with a grain of salt, but yeah, I think it would be wonderful for you get your ears pierced"?

I'm probably aging myself here, but it's mildly annoying to see so many words for something that should just be assumed until someone explicitly says "I'm an expert, make sure you clean them regularly or don't get them at all".

The earrings are just a random example I thought of just now.

(This is somewhat satire, somewhat curiosity and somewhat ranty lol)

EDIT: Thanks for the insightful history lesson guys! I actually learned a little bit about the internet (at the risk of really honing in on my age lmao). I feel I should clarify, though. The issue I want to address isn't the use of disclaimers in general, but rather the need for exceptionally long ones like my example above where the disclaimer is like 5x longer than the actual comment, which, btw, thank you all for commenting at least 5x more information than disclaimers lol

Originally it was going to be "over the last twenty years" but I decided to be more flexible.

A lot of discussions about how society has changed or how the world is different always circle around to smartphones, social media, "no one talks to each other in person, they're on their phones always" and the like.

Outside of those topics, what else has changed, by your perception?

I spend a lot of my day doom scrolling and it's kind of hard to doom scroll if you're reading the same shit all the time. I know there aren't that many people on here and that's why my feed doesn't have much variety, but surely I can joint communities so I can doom scroll and give my unprompted opinions to people that probably couldn't care less about what I have to say

An old friend/aquaintance I've not spoken to in a few years popped up recently and we got chatting a little over text. In the few years since we spoke she's had two babies by two different guys. They're ~6 months and ~2-3 years.

She said that we should get coffee and catch up properly, and I was sort of down, although I'm not really that enthusiastic about catching up with someone I've frankly not thought about in a few years. But hey, it's something to do, and it might be interesting. So I suggested a coffee shop near her and asked if she'd be able to get time away from the kids, but she said that no, she'd have to bring the kids along.

I don't want to be a dick but I'm really not interested in sitting in a coffee shop with two babies. They're mostly just going to be the focus of the occasion because they need constant attention, and I don't really like kids in general. And, if they cry or act up and attract attention I will hate that.

AITA? How do I tell her I'm really not interested in sitting with her babies for an afternoon?

EDIT: for clarification: There is only so much space between the front of my head and my brain. How does so much snot fit in there? Is it generated continuously so that there is always more available? Does it come from the lungs, and if so, what is the process of transport to my nose?

I think for me, its either:

(Ranked by most to least likely)

  1. Heart Attack
  2. Suicide (Probably by Jumping)
  3. Hit by a vehicle
  4. Murdered by a family member
